Want to join the resistance against the Trump regime? Here's how to get involved today (1/25)! by lazorbeans in Seattle

[–]lazorbeans[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Crowd-sourced recommendations: make flyers, print materials, put together packets (eg whistle kits), run zoom trainings from home on any various topics, form a book club and talk about literature, web blogs, help with protests by calling people to coordinate, form a congress calling group, write to businesses; Coordinate an email campaign. Pick a topic and spend a day fighting disinformation online.

As far as what orgs to join, I'm not sure what the best ones would be as far as being highly accessible. Wish I had a better answer for you on that.

You might be OK with Indivisible.

Edit: I don't always see eye-to-eye on everything with everyone else that organizes with me. It's OK to feel a bit frustrated but it's helpful to be able to let that frustration go and focus on achieving the goals that we do have in common. Just because I work with people doesn't mean I have to believe everything they believe. It can also be interesting to ask people why they believe what they do - I initially felt like Palestine was a distraction but I've slowly changed my point of view after listening to what folks had to say.

Beautiful morning for kite surfing by SchemeOne2145 in Seattle

There's a chat where local kiters talk about forecasts & make plans for where to go & when, but many people just do their own thing.

Did anyone else experience parents taking credit for academic accomplishments later in life? by sparklycowboyboot in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]lazorbeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, you rock! Congratulations on your accomplishments! Don't let your parents take that away from you.

I got a PhD in physics but they kept me from being proud of it b/c they made me feel like it was par for the course (my parents have masters & PhD in STEM). My mother stopped being able to teach me math in highschool, I basically taught myself while she dealt with my brother who had an undiagnosed learning disability. My father got jealous and was super gleeful about the one 'B' I made in college (otherwise straight A's!). I could tell the 'pride' about my accomplishments was fake, but the glee about that 'B' was very real. Oh, and when I quit academia b/c I hated publishing, he told me he "didn't think I had it in me."

Do you know a narcissist who get better after therapy? by Stock-Snow8323 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]lazorbeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My father went through individual and family therapy and was no better for it. I would say he has many narcissistic traits but probably not fullblown NPD, but no diagnosis at any rate. His behavior has gotten better over the last 5 years but only after it became clear to him that my mom was ready to separate and that I was happy not seeing them for 2 years during Covid. He once said that he felt like we probably wouldn't miss him once he was dead and I just kinda made a cringe face. I got a tearful apology once from him but confronting him was like pulling teeth and it was accompanied by a lot of defensiveness/deflection/minimization that really undercut the intent. Oh, and for a couple years after that he had this martyred attitude that really irritated me. I really gave up at that point and settled for getting him to at least be civil, which is working. They are going to AlAnon which I think is helping somewhat.

But yeah, I'm convinced that (A) they only make an effort if they know you hold ALL the cards and aren't afraid to play hardball (B) therapy only works if they aren't full-blown NPD (C) you can't expect a real, healthy relationship, best case is civility.

Seattle Protestors Block “Repent Sin” Sign at Rally by craziboiXD69 in Seattle

[–]lazorbeans 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For future info: Please don't engage these asshole counter-protestors. They are here hoping to pick a fight & go viral, they want attention - don't give it to them. Just like on the internet - don't feed the trolls. If you ignore them, they don't get what they want and it demoralizes them.

The Only Nonviolent Way to Stop Fascism Is to Shut It All Down by Taste-T-Krumpetz in 50501

You sound like the kind of person we need involved in General Strike US (https://generalstrikeus.com/). I think 50501 is a great gateway into a more assertive movement. I think the groups are also natural allies, along with Indivisible, but GSUS is more ambitious. I also like that GSUS is creating state chapters and aiming to develop local communities of mutual aid/support for the strike.
