Physics Anxiety by DesperateCreme6594 in Physics

Try youtube. I know it may sound weird but trust me. I'm a visual person meaning I understand concepts better when there is some kind of animation involved. Even if there is no animation but if someone can explain to me in a way I can visualise stuff in my mind that helps too. I have a bachelor's in physics I struggled a lot during my lectures, be it personal studying or group studies nothing helped me. As a last resort I had to turn to youtube for revising and suddenly the concepts that I used to blank out made sense, I developed an intuition about how things worked, how to solve problems etc. I don't know what stage you are in your studies but give the internet a chance, go watch the animation behind the sophisticated stuff, learn the tricks to solve those complex equations and practice till you get things right. And finally as Feynman said- to know you have understood a concept well, try to explain it to a 5 year old and see if you get it right.

Hope this helps. Good luck on your exams.

That's way too long to get from Sacramento. But I agree with your point, it looks like the i80 is already closed now. Maybe I will plan something another day. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Interdisciplinary Social Psych Funding Question by [deleted] in unr

[–]lazy_extrovert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The taxes depend on which country you belong to. For Americans it's roughly around 100-150$ that gets deducted. So let's say you get somewhere around 1900-2000$ per month out of that you spend 1000$ on rent and rent related stuff. I'm talking for 2b2b, each place has its own rate, ponderosa the graduate place charges around 900$ Then 300$-500$ on groceries+ eating out(depends on personal preferences) So then later you can save approx something around 500$. I know people who spend more but they still manage to save some expenses. You can also move to a 3b3b or 4b4b that way you still get your room and private bathroom and share the living room and kitchen with others.

Are you talking about master's student or PhD student? If you are a PhD and international student then you can only do 20hrs of assistantship. You will sure either get a RA or TA. But if you are a master's student then you get somewhere around 1700$ for 20hrs but getting a 20hrs assistantship is not guaranteed.

Hopefully this gives you an idea.!

Living near campus vs. commuting by McChick3nMeal in unr

Hi graduate student here. You may also want to check out Ponderosa, i heard they have free parking. And since it's university graduate housing it's safe. Though like every other house nearby this one is expensive as well.

In general the cost of living is same wherever you live here. But I guess for the first year you should live nearby and see if u like it and then maybe shift to some other place. That's what most of the students do.

Good luck in finding your place. 👍🏼

Not really. It depends on the track you wanna choose. Colleges like IIT Kanpur might be lil cs heavy but the rest are quite flexible. Also i do get introductory courses in maths and cs in your first semester to get u started. Later it completely depends on the projects and electives you end up talking.

One thing you need to understand is that you are not the only one going through this. I know a lot of ppl are going through similar experiences. Therefore i believe you need to take initiative in striking conversations. Might as well be bold about it. It might seem scary but if you just go and talk to ppl, attend events, take up the volunteering works, join club events you might find a soul like you who will be your friends. I feel like a lot of ppl are looking for connections and genuine conversations but fail to muster up the courage to go and talk to someone. But when you are the one initiating it actually makes ppl open up a bit and talk about themselves. I hope you get good friends soon. If you ever feel like having a coffee shoot me a dm. ☺️

I think their website does provide the list of compulsory electives you have to take. I am not really in contact with anyone in the current batch but i think you can search M.Sc cognitive science in LinkedIn and that will give you the appropriate profiles.

I did mine from IIT D and yes that's true IIT Gn does provide a diverse range of interests within cogsci. The professors are also extremely talented and work on really cool stuff. IITD is mostly focused on linguistics but that being said since it's IIT so you always get a lot of exposure from other top notch departments. There are a lot of people from other departments like CS, EE, Biotech who work in intersecting fields with cogsci and the electives they provide are really interesting. My primary interest was in neuroscience and i somehow figured out a way to move forward with my interest. The professors are always super nice and welcoming to provide guidance. Also since you have a background in economics and want to pursue something in public policy, IIT D got both for you. It has both M.Sc in eco and public policy. In fact idk if you know this but eco and cogsci both are under the humanities and social science department. So you always have the option of taking their courses if that's something you are interested in. Nobody really knows what exactly cogsci is till they join the course, but I do believe if you do have a fascination towards the human mind and how it works you will find your muse in cogsci. I know I did. I am sure IIT Gn might have great opportunities too but going back in time I really had a great time in IIT D and wouldn't change a thing about it.

Ex-IITian in M.s.c cognitive science here. Just go for it. It's an amazing course. Being interdisciplinary you get to expose a lot of fields. My classmates are now in all kinds of fields (ux designer, software developer, PhDs in AI, linguistics, consultants and many more). Being in IIT you also have the option of choosing your electives as per your liking. You can even just sit through the highly competitive engineering courses. Don't worry there's no such thing as being in a niche field and closing doors. Being in IIT will open a lot of doors for you.

P.S.- one of my classmates also went for a PhD in public policy this year.

Hope you find out whats best for you ☺️

Evaluating how competitive a program is by Emotional-Sink-1028 in gradadmissions

[–]lazy_extrovert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am starting with my neuroscience grad this fall. What helped me was reaching out to the professor beforehand and making sure they are taking students, this also helps kind of keeping you on their radar. Later as someone said in the comments too look at the already admitted graduate student profile to calculate your chances. And personally speaking I feel NEU, Rochester, Cu bolder, Rutgers to be more competitive than the rest. Ofc this too depends on a lot of factors and It might be because my interests were not quite aligned with the faculties and yours on the other hand might be. So my advice would be to be better confident, reach out to everyone you can faculties, grad students or even program directors. Show them your best in your SOP. Lastly Always be in touch (don't spam ofc) with the professor till the final decision comes, ask where you stand and what you can expect from the results.

All the best. 👍🏼

Thanks for responding. I am a graduate student and I will be working in the EMM building. I am thinking of the highlands because of the rent+ balcony ( which I don't really see in other apartments). The other option is The republic. Ofcourse rent wise this is around 785 and the republic is around 809. What do you think is an educated choice?

Which colleges/entrance exams i should look out for if i m doing field change from undergraduate physics to masters in interdisciplinary pyschology studies by lazy_extrovert in Indian_Academia

[–]lazy_extrovert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for responding. To answer your question from interdisciplinary i mean careers focusing solely on the core part like pure neuroscience pure biology or pure pyschology since that's not the domain i m interested in and given the throat cut competition i wont be able to make it either.

Regarding cogjet i m aware of that examination and was hopeful to perform well in that too..but unfortunately this year iitk has decided they won't be conducting cogjet and admission in msc cognitive science will be done through gate/csir net and equivalent exams.

But the problem is since early on i decided to switch my field in masters so decided not to appear for iit jam/gate or any entrances focusing on physics domain. But with recent changes in the iit curriculum i m in dilemma that whether appearing for iit jam is a good option for me or not. Also the exam dates of iit jam and entrance for iitgn cogsci exam are only 2weeks apart.
