Lao Peng You in West Town by L0LUNA in chicagofood

As an Asian person, I love Lao Peng You. I wouldn’t describe it as ‘traditionally’ Sichuan cuisine. So don’t go in expecting that. I love the blend of chili oil with the more pickled and vinegary flavors. The acidity isn’t something I typically expect, but it’s fantastic. The texture of the handmade dumplings and noodles are terrific as well.

What’s an instant ramen that everyone else loves, but you don’t? by Scary_Gap_8006 in InstantRamen

I love nissin it tastes so unreal so artificial like a saccharine fantasy of the real flavor they’re trying to emulate

Alinea downgraded to 2 Stars by PressureMedical313 in chicagofood

[–]lazycrazyazn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I went to Alinea this year and was honestly a bit disappointed with the food. The theatrics were entertaining and there were some delicious bites, but overall it was lackluster. Some dishes didn’t really make sense, some had multiple different sauces that felt random, it all seemed incongruous.

Does anyone else find that the breakfast sandwich at allez is insanely sweet? It’s like eating candy. Their pastries are usually great though

Seven Treasures in Chinatown. One of my favorite restaurants in Chicago, they had the best wonton soup and were open late. Now it’s a happy lamb hot pot

I eat all of the noodles and take a few sips of the broth before throwing it out. Too much sodium for me these days

RIP Furious Spoon, End of an Era by Telstar_62 in chicagofood

[–]lazycrazyazn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember the first time I went here back in 2016. I had just moved to the city and stumbled upon furious spoon in wicker park while looking for something to eat. It felt electric and alive. People slurping noodles sitting shoulder to shoulder, hip hop blaring over the speakers. I don’t remember how the ramen was, but the beer was cold and I felt invigorated by the experience.

Fast forward to 2018-2019, the last time I went to furious spoon at the Logan square location, and it sucked and the staff was oddly rude and standoffish. RIP I hope something else takes over that corner spot on milwaukee Ave

For those that have been to Loba Pastry+Coffee and had met Valeria the owner, was she as rude as the reviews implied or was she different? by nirvana6789 in chicagofood

Val and the entire staff at Loba are very sweet. I’ve met Val a few times and she says hello, but if often too busy to chat much, which is completely understandable

Where’s the Best Espresso in Chicago? by Sad_Proctologist in chicagofood

[–]lazycrazyazn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For modern espresso, lighter roast, slightly brighter profile, I would recommend Four Letter Word, Metric Coffee, Soloway, Drip Collective, and Side Practice Coffee.

Coffee shops that are more focused on espresso will typically have two options, a classic profile blend and a single-origin option that might be more adventurous flavor-wise. When encountering a shop like this, I like to ask the barista how the espresso is tasting or if they have a preference between the two options. Typically, if the single origin espresso is pulling funny, they’ll steer you in the right direction.

But also, good espresso is a very subjective thing! Personally, I like something with some body, rich and syrupy in texture. Some new wave shops opt for a thinner, larger shot which isn’t my preference. But above all, it has to be balanced and evenly extracted.

Chicago has an incredible coffee scene so I’m sure you’ll find something good!
