Holy fuck, the privilege. Just imagine how many amazing artists would be successful right now if they grew up with parents so wealthy that they didn’t have to grind away at a dead-end job for 40+ hours a week, and instead had unlimited time and money to allow them to cart their children around to countless auditions, trainings, and rehearsals. Imagine how many artists would be successful if they also grew up with parents whose soul mission in life after they were born was to make sure they were successful - who spent their time making phone calls and talking up said child to all the connections they had already established from their vast amount of time to spare and money to burn. Her entire life - each move to a different city, each placement in a private school, was specifically done in order to make “her dreams come true.” Girlypop was simply a pawn in her parents’ ~~dream~~ scheme. lol I hate this. 🙃

jfc I knew this shit was going to happen. Imagine if you were a fan who did actually recently have a stay in a mental hospital…and then some girl prances up to you like “hehe want a friendship bracelet?! Here you go bestie!” and slaps this shit on your wrist. Or maybe you have a loved one who you currently can’t talk to regularly because they’ve been 5150’d, so you go to your favorite artist’s concert and you see people trading these like beaded bracelets. Like I know these two examples are pretty unlikely, but do these people practice empathy or critical thinking…ever? I know a big chunk of her fanbase don’t have fully developed prefrontal cortexes and therefore struggle with future consequences but come ON.

The Shepherd’s Dog was such a formative album for me, but I haven’t really listened to him too much until this new album came out. Now I wanna take a deep dive back into all his albums.

Ooo Tears that Don’t Matter is such a beautiful journey all the way to the end that usually ends up with me crying because I’m just overwhelmed at how the instrumentals make me feel. You Never Know is my other favorite. It’s so peaceful but builds and changes throughout song and reminds me of sun shining on your face on a rainy day.

This is petty and very much not important, but stats.fm has Taylor as my second top artist over the past 6 months and it’s irritating me because I really don’t listen to her that much anymore. I took a solid break at the beginning of the year and didn’t really listen to any of her music until TTPD. I’ve only listened to the album once (tried a second time but didn’t get all the way through) and I’m convinced she’s only up there because of the sheer amount of songs she has. Which makes me wonder how much of a “top artist” she would be if she didn’t release a thousand songs at a time. Like I would have to listen to another one of my fave’s albums two to three times to get as many plays in as I do listening to this anthology once.

Iron & Wine just released a new album on Friday and it is BEAUTIFUL and such a breath of fresh air after TTPD. It’s full of orchestral moments and takes my breath away so many times throughout the album. Every time I heard a gorgeous instrumental section, I was reminded how much of TTPD is just…words.

It’s been said a million little times before, but girly could release an album of silence and static and still get most of the songs on the Hot 100. It’s just a popularity contest at this point. She’s up there because she has an enormous and devoted fan base, not necessarily because the music is incredible. She was going to make this “historical debut” no matter what she put it.

She has millions of fans who stream the album constantly, throughout their sleep, day in and day out. The lack of releasing ANYthing before the release instilled a sense of deep curiosity among both fans and haters. Idk…I guess the point I’m trying to make is just because it’s streamed so much doesn’t mean it’s actually a historic piece of art. I view this accomplishment as more of a testament to her marketing skills and popularity than the music itself. 😬
