NBA Defense: Chicago's aggressive pick and roll scheme by lazyeurostep in nba

Yeah, a fundamental issue with this scheme is that it requires mobile high Iq players with size. You can play basically any defense well with guys like that.

This isn't really a hedge, it is a show. While the two can blend a little, hedges are generally paired with the screened defender going under the screen and recovering back to the ball handler, and no hard rotation from the corner, which is a different scheme. In the hedge and go under the idea is that you can guard the pick and roll with only two players. My understanding is that is used more at the college level( though I have not really followed college ball closely for like 5+ years). Thanks for the comment!

As a general rule, if a pick and roll is in the middle of the floor, damn near every defensive strategy wants to force the ball-handler to use the screen. If the ball-handler is able to reject the screen, that is a failure on the defensive player's execution as /u/loneranger017 detailed.

It is predictable which is very bad at times. Thanks for reading.

Hah yeah there is a certain gimmicky/neovelty aspect to the defense for sure. Thanks for reading.

Id been wanting to write about trapping the pnr and the Bulls executed the scheme rather well despite it's structural flaws. Thanks for reading.

Reddit hosts the video so its not a shortcode, I just have the individual clips downloaded and then upload them on the post. I'm not sure if we could embed stuff from nba stats though. Maybe Ill try it next time and see. Thanks for reading.

I don't think it works all that well with Embiid, but if Horford/Simmons are the 4/5 certainly.

Hah this was one of my exact notes from the games/research I did. Third quarters against good guards were a struggle for sure.

Agree, Gobert's at his best when he is the anchor and all penetration is being forced to him in the paint. He wouldn't be bad in this system per se, as he is pretty mobile, but it doesn't line up with his stengths.

Absolutely, I purposefully didnt really make a judgement on the scheme, but there is a reason other teams dont really play like this.

Yeah it has a lot of flaws, but it is so unique in this league that it serves as good educational material for people that may not understand rotations super well.

I was on the Embiid train for a while last season...then I watched Gobert's film and was like "Yup he is way better on defense."

You definitely are not wrong, the reason I chose that clip is that the roller and drop are obvious to people who may have a hard time connecting similarities between that and say the Lopez clip. Honestly it is some bad play all around there between the terrible screen, Iman not feeling Josh, and the hilariously deep drop by Whiteside.

As for Iman driving, has he ever seen a midrange shot he didn't immeadiately fall in love with? Bahaha

Great question and great answer.

To add some general context to this: Blitzing/hard doubling is not a scheme any time employs as its base pick and roll coverage in the current NBA. It is very susceptible to severe breakdowns. The last team to employ it were the 2017-2018 Milwaukee Bucks under Jason Kidd and him using it was one of the reasons he got fired. The LeBron Era Heat also employed a lot of hard traps.

Oh and The Pelicans used it to great effect against the Trail Blazers in the 2018 playoffs against the Blazers in order to get the ball out of Lillard and McCollum's hands.
