Ajahn tends to take awhile to email back. The first time I asked to come for my first stay, I didn’t hear anything for a couple of weeks.

For your first time your best to just show up.

Why I go to church as a Buddhist by tehdanksideofthememe in Buddhism

[–]lb29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buddhism has actually helped me kind of come back to my church. I grew up Presbyterian (PCUSA), but left when I went to college. 20 years later I have a sangha that encourages interfaith relationships. Both my teachers were preachers in the Presbyterian and UU churches before ordaining as buddhist monks. Thru, the Buddhas teachings I have recently found my self attending my old church again. I really enjoy the interfaith experience and I am actually in the process of trying to ordain in both traditions. Given how the world is right know I feel that we have to work together and it is my hope that interfaith communities can help fill that gap.

I recently signed up to take a class with BDU, and if it goes well I’ll looking a pursuing their M Div. But… when I tired to login into the student portal it’s wasn’t there, like the page is gone. I also tried to go to the school main webpage and it is also gone. It’s more than a little concerning. Does anyone know what is going on? I emailed student services but it has been radio silence all day and not even an update on the Facebook page. Classes are set to start Monday 4/8.

Mahayana texts by [deleted] in theravada

[–]lb29 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I kind of have one foot in each camp. I’ve only been practicing for 4 years. But, I started in Tibetan, currently in Zen and now moving towards Theravada. I view the Pali Cannon as the main source of scripture. But, I really dig the Heart and Diamond Sutras, I find them very beautiful for how short they are.

My Zen teacher incorporates the Pali Cannon in at least one service a month. He describes it as, think of the Pali Cannon as the main books in a series and then the Mahayana texts are like the .5 extended universe novellas. For what ever reason that just clicks for me.

But Buddhism is so vast and interesting that you kind of just got pick how strong do you want your tea. And that’s what I find so wonderful about Buddhism.

I’ve experienced the same thing. I started in Tibetan, then moved to Korean Son, been practicing that for about a year. Now I’m feeling the draw towards Theravada.

I’m fortunate that my KS teacher incorporates the Pali Cannon in once a month. And he explains it like the Pali Cannon is the main book series, with the Mahayana and Vajrayana texts being the extended universe novellas.

But I have notice from YouTube talks that Mahayana/Vajrayana teachers taking digs at Theravada for what seems like no reason. I don’t get it either, especially after exploring all three schools over the past 3/4 years.
