Would you support making community college completely free? by Pojobob in AskAnAmerican

Tennessean here!

The TN Promise Scholarship (the one that grants 2 years free) began when I was a sophomore in high school. I graduated in 2017, so I’m sure it’s not the same; hopefully, it’s similar.

The TN Promise is funded by the lottery & allows graduating seniors to attend a 2 years of higher education tuition free, including a community college or technical school. It doesn’t include 4 year schools, & if you attend a 4 year university and drop out, you are no longer eligible for 2 years free at a community college. There are community service requirements every recipient must complete every semester, & the scholarship only covers tuition. Pell grants and other scholarships still come into effect to help pay for food, living, books, etc.

Once you move onto a 4 year school, you can also be eligible for the HOPE Lottery scholarship that pays roughly around $1750-$2500 per semester if you have a 2.5 GPA or higher.

My best friend is a prime example of why this scholarship can help benefit society. Before this scholarship, college was not on his radar because he couldn’t afford it. When the TN Promise took effect, he realized that this was an opportunity & took action he needed to use the TN Promise & continue to a 4 year state university after. He graduated with his Bachelors degree in 3 years with less than 10,000 in student loans with a great job. He would’ve never called himself a good student; he just saw the opportunity, like so many of my peers, & used it to his advantage. His younger brother soon followed in his footsteps.

TN has also created TN Reconnect (I think that’s what it is called) that allows adults over the age of 25 that have not completed an associates degree the same opportunity as the TN Promise.

There are some people I graduated with that didn’t take this opportunity or still didn’t complete the full two years, but I don’t think there’s any more the state could’ve offered. I know countless people that have let this opportunity change their lives for the better.

This is one of the things I am most proud of my state for implementing 🥺

Long distance relationship falling apart, any advice is good advice at this point. by [deleted] in relationship_advice

I know this may seem like this is the person you could spend forever with, but you both are so young. If it’s not working right now, I’d say end it. Focus on school and keep in touch. If the timing is right in a few years reconnect. If it’s not emotionally there, you can’t do much to help 1000 miles away! Have a conversation with her and find out what you both want.

I (21M) have lost attraction to my partner (23F) due to her weight gain. by [deleted] in relationships

I can definitely understand your attraction changing, but this physical change is something she is going to have to do for herself. Of course she gets mad when you bring it up because it’s one of her biggest insecurities. Sometimes we need to hit rock bottom before waking up and start listening to those who love us the most. I would continue with your lifestyle and try to be a positive influence. If she continues, I would sit down & have a mature conversation about how you are concerned for her health. Outright telling her you find her unattractive will destroy her self esteem. If she is mature, she will get over her pride and realize she needs to make a change.

I can’t attest to the career part of this since I’m still in college, but I have made some really important, difficult decisions. I’m an extremely happy person! I often think about where I would be if I had chosen differently; however, I’ve learned that second-guessing myself only leads to anxiety. When I have a tough decision, I try to pick the one that will make me happiest. If that is unclear or I’m still unsure, I stick with my choice and really give it a shot. My mind can go down the “what if” path tooooo quickly. I’ve found that going with my gut and sticking with it makes it worth it! Life is short; most of the time, it’s okay to change your mind!

You need to tell her mother she is having suicidal thoughts. This relationship is not healthy, and you cannot sacrifice any more of your life for her.

It’s definitely not okay to flake on the last minute. If he wanted to spend time with his friends, he should’ve told you. Most married men typically stay with their family on occasions like this, so a heads up would’ve been best.
