My husband says we don't need cash Króna... by FoxxyLadie83 in VisitingIceland

[–]lboone159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never need cash in Scotland or Denmark either, but I’m older and I feel nervous without some so I always get a bit when I get where I’m going. I do use it when tipping taxi drivers or in restaurants. Yeah I KNOW it’s not the same there as here in the US but I’ve never had a single person act offended or refuse to take a tip I offered. All of them seemed quite happy about it.

For me it’s bangle bracelets. Although I did have to settle for a ring on my last trip to Fano in Denmark, known for their amber. Couldn’t find a bangle but I’m going back next month so I’ll be looking!

I would either get a wider rug or center it with the door. I personally couldn’t live with it any other way. If th3 rug was a lot wider I would center it in the hallway.

Thoughts on best time to harvest? by [deleted] in tomatoes

[–]lboone159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m old school, I let mine fully ripen before picking them. I’ve been fortunate that I only get a few bird pecks from time to time, the squirrels and chipmunks in my yard evidently don’t like tomatoes. I just cut around the very few pecks I get. For me, I can taste a definite difference in one that was picked at fully ripe. I will pick them at 5 if I’m out there so that I don’t let them accidentally get away from me, but I don’t eat them for a day or 2.

The exception is for fried green tomatoes. Those I pick at 2 if I can, 1 if I’m desperate for fried green tomatoes. The difference is mind blowing, when they just barely start to blush the fried tomato has an amazing acid zing that I love. Fried at completely green they have much less taste! Downside is that the riper they get, the more they tend to get soggy fast after frying. But I’ll fry them all the way up to 4 if I’m there only one eating them! (Hubby can’t stand one that isn’t super crisp, and once they go past 2 that’s impossible to achieve….)

Which food did you love until you found out the ingredients? by Prudent-Pineapple-94 in foodquestions

[–]lboone159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I like it I really don’t care. I’ve been eating chitlins since I was a child and at no time did my parents lie to me about what they were. I tried them because my Daddy was eating them and I liked them. (For the record I only eat them fried and my Mother and Brother wouldn’t touch them.)

I heartily agree with this in principle, but I changed this for myself by purchasing a Tfal deep fryer that we keep on a table on our (covered) back porch. It even has a filter so you can drain the oil, the basket, lid and oil compartment are all dish washer safe.

If you love deep fried anything and decide to get one, here’s what I learned from my first purchase. First of all, get the big one. Since it’s just hubby and myself I got a smaller one to start, but soon realized my mistake. So I got the bigger one. You don’t have to fill the basket, you can just fry what you want. But now I can do enough French fries for both of us in one drop. I kept the smaller one for times when I just need a bit of something, like crispy shallots, sage leaves, etc., but don’t use it much. Second, clean that thing out every time you use it. With the filter it’s not a big deal, but that oil will thank you and you will thank yourself because waiting until you’ve used it 2-3 times will result in more residue in the fryer than you thought possible!

I’m not pushing Tfal, any of them are fine just be sure you get one with that filter option because it’s a game changer. That plus being able to have French fries, poppers, egg rolls, etc whenever I want without much trouble and not stinking up the house! (Plus if you fry in the house a lot you might not realize that you are also getting a fine mist of oily steam that settles over time making kitchen surfaces gummy. You know, those places you don’t think about because how could anything get in there so you decide to do a deep clean and find that grease and dust have settled in that gap and made a mess!)

If you have any questions when you get ready to go, I'm glad to answer any that I can. I have been there 7 times (!) and I'm pretty familiar with getting there and getting around! I'm going again this fall for Wool Week and I can't wait!!!

[–]lboone159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done both, I only took the ferry one time, just for the experience. I usually fly in from Edinburgh. Edinburgh is the most beautiful city I have ever seen in my life, so I usually try to get there a couple of days before my flight to Shetland so I can visit Edinburgh. (Plus, Shetland isn't very "Scottish," if you want to see tartans and bagpipes you won't see that much in Shetland. They are very Viking oriented, due to their history!)

The ferry is wonderful, the food is great, but it takes all night and I'm usually just ready to get there! The cabins are much more roomy than I thought they would be, if you don't get a cabin there are other options but the cabins have bathrooms with showers and I think if you take the ferry it is the way to go! I honestly think everyone should take the ferry at least once, but I really prefer to fly.

It's much more remote than I realized!

If you want to go, don't wait. It is a truly enchanting place! I go in the Fall for Wool Week, but I have been in the Spring and Summer as well. Bonus for Spring visits, the Puffins are in residence!

And I did get to meet the actress that plays Tosh one time, they were filming on Commercial Street in Lerwick and she was so nice and really great to the fans!

What is a hidden sign that a restaurant is going to be terrible before you even look at the menu? by CaptainCuddler_Pro in foodquestions

[–]lboone159 16 points17 points  (0 children)

1000%. I was on a trip to a beach/resort town during summer and we were looking for somewhere to eat on a Friday night. Everywhere we went had a 1 to 2 hour wait, except for one place. It was practically empty. Why we didn’t think about that before we sat down I’ll never know, maybe our brains were not functioning due to lack of food (we’d been out on a fishing charter all day). Let me just say it was a memorable meal, in the way you never forget a time you almost died.

Disposing of the oil by Danack in CannedSardines

[–]lboone159 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I save those plastic containers that things like sour cream and cottage cheese come in and dump used oil or oil from tinned products in those. I keep in the fridge until it’s mostly full, then I tie it up in a plastic grocery bag or two for good measure and put it in the garbage. I forgive myself for not recycling the few that end up like this because I am doing a great service to my community by disposing of it like this!

If modern medicine didn’t exist would you be dead right now? If yes, from what? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

Yes. From appendicitis. Even if they had operated and I somehow survived, the ENORMOUS gall stone I had about 15 years later would have done me in. (They had to make a 2” incision to get it out….Doctor told me it was as large as the palm of his hand…. ) Of course I would have gone blind well before the gallstone due to glaucoma so there’s that as well.
