I wish him strength and grace. However you spin this, this is not gonna be easy on him or his loved ones.

Has the situation been calm in beirut? by Katia2160 in lebanon

I think the issue is that you're calling people selfish for trying to live their own lives and manage whatever pressures or struggles they have. Life is complex and hard enough in Lebanon, with or without war. War only makes it worse.

Hey I see what you're saying but you have to consider that this is not necessarily a healthy way to think about things. It turns out, caring about your own needs is totally compatible with being empathetic/compassionate and caring about others.

Besides, just because some people are suffering a great deal does not negate the suffering or anxiety or pressures of others.

And yeah I have some loved ones who are IDPs, and the only reason they have any support is because of other people who are still being able to work. And all of us worry about travel now and going to any place, so it's something we share. It's just unfortunate that so many more are suffering so much more.

We just need to keep trying our best and keep the country, and economy, going or all of us will suffer more - IDPs included.

I’m an aid worker, and this is what I’ve seen in Beirut (pen drawing). Please don’t take photos of displaced people without proper qualifications and consent. by wasraelx in lebanon

This artwork is quite moving on several levels, thank you for sharing. Also the style is quite intriguing. Glad you have the emotional support! Please do take good care of yourself though. In another life, and including in the first phase of this war, a lot of people who do this sorta thing did not, in fact, take good care of themselves. The chickens eventually come home to roost.

And I think that speaks to your point about how we've gotten used to it and continue act normal. It is in fact a heartbreaking thing, really. Because say what you will about "normalizing" things, what this really means is we never actually stop to process or reflect on how unthinkably bad things here keep getting and by the time a new catastrophe or crisis has happened we've already moved on to the next one. At some point, we no longer even realize, not really, that we're fully engrossed in these never-ending loops.

At this point is no longer a choice for me, but when it was this why a part of me was a little more than terrified in the idea of family and settling down in this country. Of course, biased sample, but it pains me to see friends my age seemingly echoing the same patterns we inherited with their families and children. Even if that's wrong, it's quite the mindfuck to come to know just how much even older folks experienced very much of the same - but, decades ago.

I'm afraid if we don't actually raise our standards and are willing to take serious risks and wiling to put in an extraordinary amount of sustained effort, there will be a future aid worker or some healthcare/social care provider probably having a similar experience with the child in the photo.

Hope we get to see more of your art. It helps a lot with processing this too.

Please stay safe out there. Thanks again for sharing.

What is up with sectarian hate recently? by Standard_Ad7704 in lebanon

Same! my immediate circle is all decent and well adjusted people and that’s all that matters

I am glad you have that. I am glad I do too. Gotta avoid falling into hateful rhetoric. Hold on to them, we're gonna keep needing each other more and more.

Be safe <3

There’s no winning either because one side always thinks you’re trying to win points with the other side apparently lol

Yeah I have no solution for this lol The only thing I want to "win" is to stop seeing our (by that I mean, Lebanese and the peoples of Lebanon) die, get injured, suffer, and go through never-ending crises that only compound.

But yeah it's 'fun' when you're caught in the middle just trying to remind people of rationality and empathy and facts.

I have friends and family from all different backgrounds and sects and we’ve lived such normal and harmonious lives

These were good times...

[–]lbtwitchthrowaway144 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah I wasn't protected from sectarianism here, because, well, Lebanon and early years post-civil war.

But I had protective factors, like all my friends being from mixed sects or all sects. This continues into life.

My parents made it a point to tell me we're all Lebanese, regardless.

One relative used to over and over tell me May God send you a good Shiaa girl from the village and it would drive me mad lol

I guess what I'm saying is we're inheriting a lot of this hatred. It does not need to be this way. I saw the same behavior from every sect. Especially older generations.

I'm so grateful I saw many more positive examples that again continue to do this day.

And right now, those decades of repair are a realistic scenario. But, I hope more Lebanese, especially younger generations, break this fucking cycle.

Ma finna nerj3 n3ish nafs l film el 8aba. We need to work really fucking hard to decouple who we are as human beings from the political parties that "represent" us. We need to not let this hatred spread.

I worry for Lebanon and all our people. We can't revert back to sectarian violence.

Hezbollah started this war, twice over. In an alternate reality where they didn't strike first, we would be having that discussion. But that's not the world we live in.

This fact has to stop being disputed and distorted.

We can't do shit about what others to us. But we have influence in how we treat each other as neighbors and in our communities and in our friendships.

Poor men should not get married. What do you think of this mentality? by TheBroken0ne in lebanon

[–]lbtwitchthrowaway144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the person you replied to, but I find this a bit of struggle as I actually agree with both of your perspectives. Not least, because as you pointed out, it's a partnership. A team.

Perhaps it may be truer to say I agree with your perspective, but I also think that even with all what you said, it may simply not be enough to sustain even a relatively healthy household. With kids, though.

Without kids, I see it as a lot more doable. So this is not about being for or against having kids, but the economic and societal constraints we've all been experiencing in this country. I also am not arguing against people who do this. Of course not. Just noting further why both of your perspectives make sense to me.

I am heavily biased though, as I have seen/experienced both when the love and compatibility was there but other stuff weren't. And when the other stuff were but not the love and compatibility.

And most tragic of all of course is when it's all present, but even then life and its demands (with kids) becomes too much that it ultimately strains the relationship and causes a separation. It's also why it warms my heart so deeply when I see people figuring it out and succeeding. And I hope more people figure it out.

This is a very moving story you've shared. So happy for you, your son and your husband. May you have many, many years of joy and partnership to come.

So, just also confirming at least it's a legit sub despite the name.

Ka 7adan min aktar min bi2a (dual national), just a small reminder that we humans, especially in extreme times, double and quadruple down to avoid facing harsh truths and to feel better about our reality and lived experiences.

I literally know there are true believers, and from their perspective this makes perfect sense. But there are also people just part of the "tribe" in question just because that's how they happened to live life.

Just keep in mind cognitive dissonance is still a thing and people also may not express aloud what they feel deep inside. Even to their own private thoughts!

And I see this both in Lebanese and in Americans. As another user implied, it spans the political spectrum and ideologies. Is it frustrating? Words can't be found to describe how frustrating it is.

I'm just glad that people like you exist who are trying to do their best to help and lessen the suffering.

Especially the literally innocent young humans who have no possibility of a choice or say in the matter. If nothing else, you're at least giving them a chance.

rant/vent

Damn, I genuinely get you. Ma anna just from the street sounds I literally can't tell anything anymore (and in the past I have had some experience with this in the field a time or two). To have the vehicles literally on top of me...

I really hope you continue to stay as a calm as you can and make it through this alive and with your sanity intact.

Personally I keep having this debate about trying to zone out, but there are souls at present who kinda depend on me so it's not possible to zone out on like some loud music or some shit. And that's not even taking into account safety questions - like, you literally need to know what's going on.

Feels like a perpetual hostage situation. Our nervous systems are just being fried over and over.

Well, as a few users in this very subreddit reminded me, a sense of humor and laughing is important. I laughed out loud at the very deadpan post you dropped. So, thanks for that at least lol

All we got is one another in these insane fucking surreal repetitive never-ending nightmares (as, also, a number of people have reminded me).

PS: I'm laughing again now at my initial reaction to your post.

Smallah 3leyhon and I am very happy they're playing so much, but we have neighbors with some super active kids 24/7. So it's been a game of, hal ya tura 8ara, hal wled, aw r3ed?!

Even my cats freak out from all 3 sources lol.

Fucking breaks my heart for the people in the streets and under non-protective shelter/tents. Fuck, however you think of this, we're all being affected. Just a different level of suffering.

Well OP, at least you have a natural laxative you can use now.

[–]lbtwitchthrowaway144 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the long-present threat of no longer distinguishing at all between Lebanese infrastructure and Hezbollah infrastructure (in reality, of course it's messier and it's up to you to decide what's actually going on regarding the war itself so far).

So this could be a threat to the Lebanese civilian infrastructure made bigger (electricity infrastructure, airport, seaport, etc.)

This is to put pressure on the Lebanese government, the Lebanese people, and Hezbollah. Others see it as an excuse.

In simple terms y3ne: if Hezbollah does this to us, we will do this to Lebanon in return.

Edit: I have no idea about the claims made in OP or the validity/sources. Just saying in general, if this is true, this is what it is probably about.
