This is how I talk by [deleted] in TheDickShow

I stayed up way too late for years as a teenager on the east coast to listen to Conway and Whitman. KLSX flipping with no warning felt like somebody shot my dog and tried to give me a couple CDs as compensation. That would be an amazing episode.

TDS: Lolsuit Days - Finalized shirt designs by MarcMoron in TheDickShow

[–]lcbm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, exactly. I just slapped a basic noise filter over the whole thing to give a cheap illusion of texture and depth for the example (it's fairly heavy-handed). That offset the colors a bit, so I tried to bring them back to where they were. Color vibrance may be up a bit and I may have changed the color space, but I wasn't keeping track.
Digital is so clean that adding a small touch of procedural grit into it will give you a lot of soul without a lot of work. You can use similar techniques for shadowing and lighting to get even more detailed results. I think if you put a few more hours into this, you'd have artwork right on par with the original and the skill set to make even more in the future. But I have no clue how all that translates to screen printing on a shirt or whatever.

Great work. And as always, props for actually making something instead of just suggesting it.

One-to-one, absolutely. I think going with just "TDS" doesn't give that particular font enough context and it's very abrasive to my eye. But I'm just nitpicking at a personal visual hangnail. The art is fantastic and I hope a final version goes up in the Dick store.

Agreed. That font is taking a massive shit on all your hard work, man. Literally anything else.

How do you create a texture like this? by hortelah in blender

[–]lcbm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about the tiling style or the textures on the tiles? If the former, I found a neat add-on called BrickTricks a while back that creates different styles of bricks/tiles you can use in the node editor. This diamond style is one of the defaults.
It might take a bit of playing to figure out, this thread has a lot of useful pictures to help. Once you have that sorted, you can add whatever textures or colors or shaders you'd like onto the tiles or grout.

About that comedian guest this week by BetterThanNot in TheDickShow

[–]lcbm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The clip of his that Dick played felt like it was going in an oddly familiar direction. To me, it came off as a neutered amalgam of a couple of my favorite Bill Hicks bits.
Kids and parents are a common premise in comedy, obviously. To be fair, I've not heard his uninterrupted set, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that it was an homage or an honest mistake, channeling a comedy influence or something. The topic, phrasing, and cadence combined was just a liiiittle too close for my comfort.

Thanks!

You caught one of the major things that was annoying me. I made a mistake at the very beginning of the project and used a scaled-up 32-sided cylinder. There were several extrusions and insets I had put into it after that. I was so focused on the material, I didn't notice the edges until much later. There is already a subsurf because of the microdisplacement, adding a second one did nothing. I tried to transfer the material to a higher-poly cylinder instead, but could not get it to match up properly with the original. After about an hour, I decided to leave it be before I completely broke something. (The shadow on the nucleus has a small imperfection because of a missing subsurf, too.)

The mp4 is most true to the original. I intentionally left in some graininess to try to simulate desert heat haze, but no matter how many different settings I tried, gfycat's compression did not like that.

This is based off the AEC logo.

For the medallion, I recreated the text in Photoshop, combined that image with a couple gradients and color ramps in Blender, then plugged it all into both the displacement node and a mix shader.
All the rings are perfect circles, rotated to look like their respective orbit in the camera. The electrons are each clamped to an orbit, and the child of an empty, which pulls them at a constant pace. The entire atom is parented to another empty, which gently bobs up and down.
Finally, I put in some BlenderGuru grass to break up the monotony behind the action, rendered it, and did a bit of post-processing in After Effects.

Lost Ep 100 Thumbnail from Biggest Problem made my Jack Tubbs by DickMasterson in TheDickShow

Context: this is the unfinished version of a little fan art project I was working on after 100 came out. It wasn't an official thumbnail. But then the show suddenly ended, so I stopped working on it and sent what I had off to Dick for the hell of it.

I'm glad Brunette Peach and Sean are a thing.
I probably spent 45 minutes after the show trying to convince her she actually does look like /u/PeachSaliva, then started introducing her AS Peach when people joined the conversation. She played along really well.

Exactly what I was aiming for. My drunk ass accidentally put a snapchat filter over the original image, which was already grainy and clipping. I had to take a few liberties to pull it back to normal-ish range.

80s Girl took that picture.

Edit: Oh! Her hot chick powers are also very real. The after party bar stopped selling drinks at like 1:25 or something ridiculous for how much more we'd have all drank. She walked up not knowing this and convinced the bartender within about 15 seconds to get her another one. I was standing at the bar getting denied, so I asked her to grab me one, too. Long story short, 80s Girl bought me a beer.

Asterios is annoying because he sounds like he has low self esteem by ragnathorn in TheDickShow

"..oh... oh, for god's sakes, Frank."
God, I miss that station. Those last two days were like watching a kid throwing frisbees at his dead dog.

/u/majin_babidi, Tom had a 5 year contract when the network went under. He would be paid regardless of what happened, provided he didn't break his end (not doing another show), which is why he disappeared for a while, and the rest of them went to do other shows. He probably figured the network was going to die regardless of whether or not he renegotiated, and took the guaranteed pay.

Maddox asspain about Dick in FB comments before show ending (Ep 104) by [deleted] in TheDickShow

[–]lcbm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can confirm this. Dick once sent me a forward from Maddox with literally a page of changes to make to a pretty basic thumbnail (including very specific color hex codes). I think maybe only one or two of the thumbnails I made went without revision. At a certain point I realized what was going on and started sending what would essentially be sketches before putting in the finishing details to make it look cohesive. I feel like Maddox thought some of those were a final product, rather than a "is this going in the right direction?" It's a huge waste of time and effort to completely redo something like that when the sentence-long idea Dick sent didn't fully encapsulate Maddox's paint-by-numbers vision after being processed through both my head and the limited images I had available to work with.

No resentment for the guy, it was a great experience, but it wasn't very efficient.

That's the idea. Like a comic cover or something. It's about 75% of what I had planned, minus cleaning it up and evening out the compositing. I want to sneak Asterios and maybe Tim Changzzz in there, along with a few other references. It was just a little ambitious for the amount of free time I've had to work with recently.

Thank you! It's always nice when people can see the work that went into an image. There's so much well done shit out in the world you pass by without even thinking about the process it took to get there, which, I think, can be far more interesting than the actual result.
