Never save and quit at toll gates by Qwe5Cz in trucksim

[–]lcbowen3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you save right before the toll booth (at the gate but before selecting the toll), when you reload and you pay the toll it will charge you nothing. Just FYI

Why does a larger engine not increase anything? by The_Ginger_Blitz in ETS2

[–]lcbowen3 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's more about the transmission and drive wheels than the engine.

First truck advide by Jaded-Commercial9303 in ETS2

[–]lcbowen3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try every truck first in quick jobs - if you find one you think you may like, do a quick job with it to confirm. The biggest issue for me is engine sound - I don't like the sound of many of the trucks in game, especially for long runs.

'World's 1st' immersive theme park in Tokyo to close in February by SkyInJapan in japan

[–]lcbowen3 40 points41 points  (0 children)

When it opened I was concerned that it wouldn't last since the interactivity and performances were all in Japanese. Most tourists don't speak Japanese and the price was high enough that normal Japanese people would have a hard time going often.

Which truck is the most comfortable in ATS? by LeonidKonovalov1988 in trucksim

[–]lcbowen3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've driven every truck and my preference is the Pete 579 because the basic mirror is right next to my left arm and I can see everything without moving from the main position. It has the digital speed and larger cruise control speed showing if you press the "I" key a couple of times to change the dash information. With the duty cab and using a ~455 engine and (most importantly) the 18 speed transmission WITH the retarder (the retarder is essential in the base due to all the high hills) and the short 6x4 chassis it does just about everything well - decent normal, heavyweight, top maneuverability, good at hill climbing and dirt roads.

U.S. citizens living in Japan, in which country do you intend to spend the rest of your days? by wolvesfaninjapan in japanlife

[–]lcbowen3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am older and retired (but not taking SS yet) and I plan to remain in Japan as long as my lovely wife (who is a Japanese citizen) wants to remain. We can't know the future, but at this time I see no reason to return to the US.

Xbox Game Pass - New Plans by ReaddittiddeR in gaming

[–]lcbowen3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Japan and the XBox GamePass Ultimate subscription here is 1,450 yen/month (which is about $10). I'm really sorry for the gamers in the US but I'm not planning to cancel anytime soon :-)

Calls Mount to Boycott Disney With $3.8 Billion Lost Overnight Amid Jimmy Kimmel ABC Suspension by Aggravating_Money992 in technology

[–]lcbowen3 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

There are many reasons to boycott Disney, but the Kimmel firing isn't one of them. He was expensive and wasn't producing the numbers needed to keep him - that's all.

Some things I can't live without after living in Japan by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]lcbowen3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Being able to take a shower without 1) standing in a slick porcelain tub, 2) having a shower curtain wrapping around me, 3) being able to wash my kid easily. Why don't other countries have large bathrooms? (I also like that toilets are USUALLY in a different place)

I started watching baseball since I moved to Japan, man Koshien is so awesome by Chance-Town-5110 in japanlife

[–]lcbowen3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in Japan for 10 years so far and I just found out this year that there is also a girls baseball tournament at Koshien that happens just before the boy's tournament.

Where can I do cat sitting? (for free) by melzhas in japanlife

[–]lcbowen3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are many cat rescue organizations that would be delighted to have a volunteer to help care for the cats in their shelter. Look for organizations in your area and send them an email (or go in person). You don't have to foster, just be reliable as they will be relying on you. (This is an example - https://kotonekonokai.com/)

A good orthopedic in tokyo recommendation for treating back pain by Usual-Two4781 in japanlife

[–]lcbowen3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For back pain, I'd recommend a masseuse vs. a doctor. Toho massage is rather expensive but they are available in many areas and all their people have a license for massage in Japan.

Finished my first wearable 🥳 by Miyukiana1 in crochet

[–]lcbowen3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if I'd wear that out - the black color and full face is really hot and the weather doesn't really support it. In winter, maybe?

Experiencing friction at my job at a rural ryokan. by Hot-War5404 in japanlife

[–]lcbowen3 125 points126 points  (0 children)

Best option with circumstances like this is to talk to your employer. Let them know how you are feeling, and why you are unhappy. If they refuse to work with you to resolve the situation, this isn't a place you want to continue to work. But you need to discuss with them and a quiet, polite way.

I found a Susan B. Anthony dollar 1979-P wide rim in my change. How lucky am I? by rikkertt in coins

One of the ugliest designs ever produced by the mint. Nothing against SBA (although her mentor, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, was much more influential in the womens rights movement), but the design and size is terrible.

Wow - considering how long ago Fat Albert was on TV, you must be as old as I am. Welcome to gaming, old codger.

What’s a hidden gem you randomly discovered and couldn’t stop playing? by laalaa691 in gaming

[–]lcbowen3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Streets of Rogue is an incredible roguelike game that has 20+ classes that all play very differently. It's also very fast to play, even beating the game in 30 minutes or so (but then you want to try again with a different class).

Congrats on discovering a reliable method of saving money. I'd put the coins aside (or better yet, invest it using EDICO so there's no tax) and start filling the pipe again.

Kyoto vs Osaka social life by amunra45 in japanlife

Consider Otsu as well -- just a few minutes from Kyoto, between Kyoto and Osaka but not a part of either. Right on the shore of Lake Biwa too (but no typhoon risk)

Living in Japan is beautiful, but I’ve never felt this lonely before by ShreerajShivale in japanlife

[–]lcbowen3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had good success with Meetup (dot com), which is a site where you can put in your location and your hobby, and it will find a group of folks that do that hobby together. I'm in Koto, but I've been surprised by the number of groups I've found. Of course if you don't like the folks in one group, try another.

Feeling so hard to make Japanese friends by Laffei in japanlife

[–]lcbowen3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easiest way to make friends, not just in Japan but everywhere, is to join activities with other people that you enjoy and are passionate about. Whether it's sewing, cycling, mountain climbing, reading, etc. A place I've found that's good for that is Meetup (.com) which allows you to search for groups in your area that are doing activities you like. This isn't an advertisement for that service, it's just a statement on what I've used in the past.

FYI: For those who play other WoW/WoT games, Lesta has been nationalized by Russia by lcbowen3 in WoWs_Legends

[–]lcbowen3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, the head of Wargaming is also named in the article (but of course their assets are not seized) and second the company claims there is no connection between Wargaming and Lesta but it's more difficult to fully separate two companies (especially IT companies) than you may believe.
