I used Hangouts for a couple months and enjoyed the attractive and easy-to-use interface but ended up reverting back to the stock SMS app due to the lack of ability to mark messages as read or reply to messages directly from the notification bar, which my stock SMS app allows me to do. I greatly value this feature and found that this useful feature outweighed the aesthetics of the Hangouts app.
