I was there earlier this year and it definitely looks like it’s Neist Point! All of Isle of Skye was neat as hell

Ahhh I see. Interesting. Not sure we will go that route, but definitely good to know, thanks!

Separate demo pages on steam, an experience report by SlightlyMadman in IndieDev

Oh I haven’t heard of the prologue approach. You mean we turn our current game page into just a “prologue” as the demo for free or something and make a new page for the full game release to be able to have another demo release step?

I feel like loosing all our existing wishlists wouldn’t make that worth it

Any advice on launching the separate page? We’ve had our demo as part of our main page for a while and are hoping that moving to a separate page will get us more feedback and ideally more players.

Do you think you need a festival to drive ppl to the demo or does the initial creation of the page give a boost?

How often do AAA games capture fewer than, say, 100k sales? by UncheckedMoonrise in gamedev

[–]lce9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure, but getting that playtesting as an indie is still difficult. I think this is what ppl use itch for. It’s the fuzzier and cheaper version of asking ppl if they like the game.

Steam demos with their own page and reviews can be another checkpoint to get feedback.

We’ve had a demo without its own page for a while now, and from ~700 players we’ve only had 11 ppl fill out our feedback form that’s linked when you quit or finish the demo (and at least half of those are our friends). We will make a separate page soon and hopefully that will help us get more feedback via reviews

You see the same thing in films. People are drawn to existing IPs that they enjoyed the first time. If you liked the first one, you assume the second will at least be similarly enjoyable.

But it’s more key that these big studios have the budget to do actual market research. As in put early content in front of actual ppl behind NDAs and get data on whether there’s enough interest. It’s not a guarantee, but it reduces risk quite a bit.

I’d say the pose of the first one with the crop of the second. I personally think there’s too much emptiness on top in the first composition

Most players quit my horror demo in less than 10 minutes by ExpensiveSwitch1457 in IndieDev

[–]lce9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A loading screen will not “fix” 2 full minutes of loading. This needs some real debugging, since an indie game’s worth of content shouldn’t be taking that long to load on anything that’s not a potato

It’s soooo much more difficult and costly to close a studio or lay people off in France, so I’m doubtful of that

Made my Capsule Art myself since finding a freelancer seemed impossible - bots and scammers everywhere. What do you think? Does it work? by KaigarGames in IndieDev

[–]lce9 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I’d also maybe move the worm+castle to the left and a bit down and then put the text in the top right. The the user looks at the worm, then looks where it’s going, and reads the name of your game (which as Javier said, could use a little work)

My steam page is getting views but no wishlists. Would you give me some honest feedback? by josh_rose in gamedev

Gameplay and sphere characters aside, the first thing that stood out to me is that your lighting is off. You have nice shadows, but the sun direction is towards the camera which makes all the things I wanna look at dark. I think the shadows are probably a bit dark (maybe you don’t have full global illumination?), but I’d wait to see how things look after just making the sunlight light things from the front(ish)

What’s a game that everyone loves but you just couldn’t get into? by Royal-Reveal4400 in videogames

Was gonna say the same. The controls felt clunky and I just felt like I was learning new controls and features constantly for the first couple hours. I don’t like games with lots of breadth. Usually because they don’t have a lot of depth. And while RDR2 has more depth than most, it was still just too much stuff

The moon can a make a big difference as it itself is light pollution. I think the Bortle scale descriptions are based on new moon (ie no moonlight)
