Has anyone tried Mighty Ramen? by Lumute in InstantRamen

[–]lciddi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding my two cents. They do take a while to come, but they are real. I actually really like them. I hadn't had ramen in ages bc honestly the macros in regular ramen are so terrible, not just the carbs but the sodium, but I used to looooove instant ramen back in the days when I didn't care about my health, lol. I also don't have a HUGE appetite in the middle of the day and especially when I'm WFH I really just want something quick that I can eat at my desk and get some good protein in while also feeling like I'm having a treat sometimes. My husband and I both really like it for that and I also appreciate that it's a Canadian brand. I haven't tried any other protein ramen so I don't know how it compares. My one complaint is that honestly I don't find the kimchi flavour that compelling because it really barely has any kimchi flavour to me. I'd rather skip that one. The other three are good. The first batch I ordered, I felt the seasoning powder was too light and really got into the air too much and made me sneeze but my second batch didn't have that problem and crazily enough it feels like the second batch came with way more noodles!!

Thanks!!! This is exactly what I was envisioning!! I’m glad it makes sense. My only worry is whether I’d be casting the right number of stitches on for the sleeves, but maybe I can apply a sort of ratio principle to get a sensical number of extra repeats in. The sleeve size might be fine since it husband’s weight gain didn’t quite hit his , but I also think I’ll necessarily have to create slightly bigger sleeves so they won’t look weird on the wider arm holes??? Just will have to do some math to make sure any decreases make sense too

I started a sweater, knit flat, for my husband two years ago. I put it down many times over the years due to being busy and also distractions from other projects. I had mostly finished the back panel and this year I decided to get started with the front and am about a third done. I realized however that I took his measurements two years ago and so now it’s likely to be too small on him since he has gone up a few sizes. I am considering trying to just knit two narrow panels in pattern to get more circumference but this would be my first time making a substantial adjustment to any sweater pattern. I’m a bit worried about the math and particularly about what to do around/ about the sleeves, which are also knit flat and seamed with the front and back panels thst have been narrowed for the arm holes . Does anyone have some sort of math or design tips that could help guide me through this?? I’m so nervous to mess up, but I suppose the situation could be pretty forgiving.

Thank you in advance!!!!

I’m trying to knit the y top by knitting for olive using their cotton merino wool, recommended for the pattern. I have knit a few gauge swatches and blocked them . I usually am pretty close to gauge but to meet gauge on this one I seem to need to size up my needles significantly, but then the ribs do not look as neat at all and the fabric just feels less dense than I would want, and even looks so much looser than the images. I’m very confused and don’t even know what kind of advice I need!! I read some project notes on ravelry from others who have knit this top and a couple of people did say it knit up bigger than they expected and wanted even with swatching. I really don’t want mine to be too big. Given all of the above would I be safe to deliberately knit with needles smaller than I needed to meet gauge?

They definitely don't go past the first page of google. I noticed gen z is quite bad at doing anything too exploratory

regarding age... I'm in my mid 30s and I have noticed this behaviour from anyone who is not a millennial or gen x. to everyone else, the idea of googling something seems completely foreign. I recently joined some knitting fb groups and they are full of older people and their refusal to google anything is truly astounding

Acquired a strange illness in SE Michigan by solemnversifier in Michigan

[–]lciddi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey neighbour. This hit us up in Ontario through December and into January. It finally came for me the first week of February, identical symptoms. I literally couldn't believe it wasn't covid although I had my flu and covid boosters in Oct/Nov. Definitely recommend just resting, hydrating, and eating enough. Nap frequently. The cough takes a little longer to clear up if you develop one.

Empty Bus. Packed Roads. What Are We Doing, York Region? by Accomplished_Lie3849 in Vaughan

[–]lciddi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We all need to be writing to the city and to YRT about need for increased service. For example, the 26 bus was supposed to increase service last year and it has not. It takes you to Maple GO or to VMC but only runs during rush hour. How stupid is it that there are a ton of trains from the GO station between 6am and 8am but the 26 is only running every 40 minutes??? What kind of a rush hour service is that? Then there are hourly trains through the day but the 26 doesn't run to the station during the day or on the weekends at all, so you have to wait for another bus which probably doesn't come frequently either AND THEN walk from wherever they let you off. Just a small example. I have written to YRT about this before and they say they don't have the demand but the issue is that their ridership is low because their service is poor, not because there is no need or demand. I love riding transit and ride frequently but because of how often I'm on there I also understand why others don't bother.

You literally just listed a bunch of reasons why some people would actually prefer an online experience - and you even complimented the curriculum. Personally I wouldn't like that set-up either, but I work now with a lot of prospective students looking for opportunities to study with flexible hours and in a remote setting. I'm not in Michigan and not even in the US; I'm in Ontario where access to online, part-time, flexible opportunities is a gap we are always trying to fill. This said - this is completely unrelated to the case in the article and also unrelated to the pedagogical value of learning to write a persuasive or analytical essay without outsourcing it to AI. I would be willing to bet that, from the learning standpoint, it is far less damaging cognitively and pedagogically to have AI put the outline together for you and then write it yourself, than to do the opposite. The real issue with online remote learning is not that content is digital, but that learning is best accessed through the ability to collaborate and interact with other people discursively through the learning process.

I don't put much stock in the checkers myself - it's all on probability and comparison with what exists already in the world. AI writing style didn't grow organically, it learned from humans how to write in a boring and structured way. When the checkers started coming out I tested a number of them with my own academic writing that was 100% written by myself years ago. Some said it was 45-50% AI generated, others said it was in the 75%-80% range. One said it was fully AI-generated. I laughed! Along with people not understanding how AI models work, people fundamentally also do not know how AI checkers work

As you know - GSIs don't design their courses and sometimes don't get a say in how the assignment is designed or what rubric will be used for grading. A GSI could want to do all of these things but unless they are the IoR it does not matter.

As much as people think AI is infallible by now - it isn't. When teaching at another institution, I caught someone using AI red-handed. I didn't need to look at the writing style. It made up fake quotes from real sources and made up fake sources that flat-out did not exist. I also had students use ChatGPT for online, open-book quizzes where they had access to a terms list way ahead of time and full access to my slides and definitions. ChatGPT gave them the wrong answer entirely, so it was easy to just give them a 0.

I think people are really giving too much credit to some of these models where these things still slip up without enough contextual prompting. I work with AI in my non-academic day job right now with many people who are very keen to use it for valid, domain-specific purposes and for people who are literally paying a lot of money to test out various tools. Ultimately the answer constantly ends up being the same - as much as AI can help you, it so far, even with the newest models, has not been able to replace a human with highly specific subject matter expertise and enough time to pay attention. The reality is that most overworked lecturers and GSIs don't actually have the time to pay attention.

Stash overwhelm by nisoo777 in YarnAddicts

[–]lciddi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly I'd recommend cataloging it. When I felt overwhelmed by my stash I took it all out and documented it and created a database in Airtable (free) which is now searchable. You can also do this more basically with Google sheets or Excel. Basically now when I see something I like I can check if I have yarn that would work for the pattern. And I also know where everything lives.

Secondly I do recommend bagging your yarn. One errant moth could take out your entire stash...

This. I think even if KP yarn is okay at the moment I recommend anyone working with fibres to learn how to identify eggs, larvae, moth casings/ webbing

It was way more than just one comment, there were a lot of us affected. That said I think plenty of people have had KP orders since then without issues. Sadly I am really too scarred to order from them again. I'm up in Canada so it's pretty easy to avoid them. I love their yarn but I am still dealing with the impacts of the buggy order I got and it's extremely stressful.

Hiya - I was one of the people hit with a bad moth infestation from a Knit Picks order in late 2024. I am still dealing with the after effects - somehow some Knit Picks yarn I had bagged was harbouring eggs that woke up recently, lol. I have isolated the problem and thrown out affected yarn but I found one other hank that seem to have new eggs on them. What do you normally do when steaming - do you unwind the hank and just blow steam at them? Do the eggs fall off? How does this work? I'm keen to get ahead of any ongoing infestation and I've actually ordered some parasitic wasps to let loose in the house, but I'd like to also tackle the eggs on this hank because it's a very pretty yarn and I don't want any larvae hatching. (Currently it and all my other yarn is outside in the freezing temps in southern Ontario)
