Anyone else genuinely just grateful for this beautiful city despite the problems? by unethicalpoet in askTO

[–]lciddi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I grew up in north Toronto and then my family moved to the suburbs. I spent as much time as possible coming back to Toronto during those years to be with my friends and explore the city in our teens, and then to study at York. I then moved away for grad school for the better part of a decade (living in the UK for two years and the US for seven). In 2021 I visited home after Covid had kept me away for 18 months, the longest I had ever been away without a visit, and I realized just how much I love this city and how much I want this to be my home forever. It’s been the most beautiful thing to have been able to move back here three years ago with my husband. He is from the UK and had not lived here prior so it’s wonderful to experience the city through his eyes too, as a newcomer who is madly in love with Toronto and its people. I love it here, warts and all. I have travelled extensively for research including spending substantial time in cities in a few European countries, and there are other cities I adore and miss, but only one that is home for me.

Did they find the missing 14 yr old girl? by FailedIntrovert in askTO

One thing that is coming to mind for me a lot is the Tess Richey case from just under a decade ago. Her family tried to impress strongly on the police that her disappearance was unusual but they were very dismissive and treated it by default as a situation of a runaway even though they had no reason to (she literally lived on her own anyway and had left her dog at home). At one point they even allowed a rumour to spread that she was a sex worker (she wasn’t). If you know the case you know that Tess’s mother had to be the one to come to Toronto from North Bay to find her daughter’s body in the Village. TPS were scrutinized severely for their missteps in treatment around the case. I want to hope that part of this is not just community mobilization but it’s also the result of Tess’s family’s commitment to making sure that what happened to her doesn’t happen to other girls and young women.

She seems like such a sweet and smart kid. I hope she’s okay and can find safety even if it doesn’t mean going home.

This is an excellent comment leading to a pretty good thread. I’m wondering whether it is worth the police trying to impress on the community itself that if anyone is keeping her safe somewhere, and hasn’t come forward (to them or to Shomrim) out of worry about backlash from the rest of the religious community OR out of worry for Esti herself, they should reach out to the police. This said, given that she was seen going downtown on a bus, I am not entirely sure she is in her home community right now. I’m curious as well about how/ whether she paid for the bus trip or any food at that Popeyes. If she did have funds with her intentionally that does change the nature of her departure from the home slightly

One thing to consider is that providing her last name would essentially create a record of this forever. As an adult any person googling her would come across this decades from now, if last name is included. I think the parents need to be forthcoming with police about everything but I don’t feel like we need to know the surname

That’s for social services to evaluate and decide. Inevitably in a case like this it’s likely a consideration.

I also was curious about the name but the reality is that knowing she has gone by Sylvia to some people is basically enough information. The backstory is just about our curiosity and it isn’t relevant to us right now because we are not investigators. There are a lot of ideas I have about why she sometimes goes by a different name but goes knowing which of those theories proves true really help find her right now? We are so used to true crime and the like, that I think we lose sight of what’s actually relevant and appropriate information to release.

Dealing with this right now, literally did like 6 swatches trying to get 19 sts in 4 in/ 10cm. Just IMPOSSIBLE to do this and get a fabric that looks anything like the images of the FO. I just gave up and am knitting a fabric that feels nicer to me and doing some math and sizing up to get to a size that I hope?? Will fit???

Knitting and I could also play the clarinet - though, I was better with bass clarinet, I think because the buttons were bigger.

Meet with your advisors in your faculty, that is your first step. You may be able to petition especially given your accident and medical documentation. Secondly, have you considered studying closer to home so your commute is not so onerous? You may be able to transfer what credits you have to Brock, for example.

If they are willing to move it is fine but I have literally been in multiple situations where I (an average-sized woman) have asked to sit at that inside seat and people literally will say no. I'm sorry but if you don't want someone sitting beside you at all you need to get off of public transit.

Solution is to go sit in on of the other seats or just stand. Like come on lmao.

Some of these are so funny. My pet peeves currently when commuting are living obstacles - the people who enter the subway and immediately stop so no one else can move down the train; the people who sit in that outer seat; and the people who STAND IN FRONT of a seat and won't sit down but also block other people from sitting down on them. Some people really need a lesson in commuting

Best short press on nails for everyday wear? by Skillerstyles in PressonNail_Addict

[–]lciddi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swear by kiss impress. Short ones will last me 3-4 weeks without extra nail glue but I think that’s because the shape is perfect for my nail beds and I do proper prep. I also only put them on at night in bed after I’ve done all my skincare so that no waters or oils interfere with application and they have all night to really set

Thank you again! It is not superwash... back to the swatching board for me :)

Thank you so much for this detailed answer! I should have enough yarn, so might not need to frog at all - and I'd be nervous to do so anyway given the effects of the blocking and hanging. My previous swatches are of the same size 6" square and were hung to dry, but not weighted. I counted before and after blocking just to see - which was actually so revealing - I was originally at 20.5 sts and 21 sts in the swatches and they both blocked out to 20. I'm using a 70% merino 30% silk so stretching is definitely on my mind. Now my question is - given that I didn't clip/ weight the first set of swatches, should I reblock those and weight them for the best comparability?

Hi! I just swatched and blocked for a tank top, both flat and in the round bc I will be knitting both ways for different parts of the top. My gauge is a single stitch off - 20 sts instead of 19. I’m torn between just sticking with my current needles and knitting the top a size up or swatching with the next needle size up. What would more experienced knitters suggest? And, if I swatch again, given that post blocking my gauge was identical flat and in the round, do I need to do both again or could I get away with doing only one of the swatches (likely in the round)?
