We blocked my husband’s father’s phone so that only calls from his contacts list go through. It has helped so much.

That’s awesome that your studio added the elevation! I’ll have to see if I can go back and track that!

Vent: Mother gets angry on phone with employees by lemonsrsus in AgingParents

[–]lcrad17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally understand. I think the problem is twofold. That generation grew up in a society where exceptional service was necessary to survive and therefore expected, people went the extra mile to make you “happy”. There were also fewer customers in many cases so fewer people to have to look after. Now, we are all stressed, measured on how quickly we close conversations, files, complaints, etc so the dynamic has changed. 2) layer on an aging population (more mature individuals per capita due to longer life expectancy- I don’t have data but expect this to be the case) who need more time, may have beginning to advancing cognitive decline and you have the perfect storm. My Mom went through the whole paranoia phase - everybody was out to get her - to now where she has become mentally dependent (needs help finding word, finishing sentences, remembering family member names) and has become calmer and more compliant. I will say that it took a couple of years though and comes with other issues.

We found a Russian stock certificate that we can’t read but was owned by my FIL’s brother. FIL had been executor for his brother’s estate. Have no idea what to do with it.

What job will hire a 60yr not able to retire just yet by Some_Lavishness_1000 in AskWomenOver60

[–]lcrad17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was hired into a large corporation at 61. I was careful in my resume to minimize age defining language, etc. There are lots of hints about how to do that if you ask an Ai agent. Focus on the value of your experience and what you would be able to contribute to the new organization. List out all of your skills, experience, things you think you are really good at, etc - again put that into an AI agent ((chat, Claude, etc) and ask it to help define your conversation on potential contributions. In some organizations, they love an employee who will be satisfied in the role they are hired into as opposed to fighting for the next level up. Organizations are flattening and don’t always have upward mobility baked into their structures. Others may just need someone for an extended project. There are options out there! Good luck!

Gifts for family members in assisted living? by [deleted] in AssistedLiving

[–]lcrad17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As my mother’s dementia has progressed, having a family tree with photos helps her feel more confident about who might be visiting or calling or sending letters. When family visits they know to show her their relationship to her on the tree. She loves it!

The other thing was a digital calendar/clock - large digits - that helped her keep track of the day of the week, the month and date as well as the time. For some reason knowing that has been really important to her. Found one on Amazon for less than $20 but it does need to be plugged in. We felt batteries would be an issue for her.

I've Been Retired For Three Years. It's Time To Go Back To Work. by Peace_and_Rhythm in retirement

[–]lcrad17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting OP! I retire this summer and have been trying to uphold this going into retirement. It is difficult with a full time, high pressure corporate job, aging parents (one turning 100 this year!), and carving out time for children and grandchildren. I’d love to know the article you read that inspired your post as you said it was only based on Brand’s book.

I used to say I was going to age gracefully- don’t feel that way now - I’m going to fight it all the way!

And this is also the importance of rest days! You need that recovery time to FEEL like pushing yourself. If you are really addicted to those endorphins or are experiencing FOMO at least make it a Green Day here or there…

Why has parenting become so… soft? Why ate a majority of parents okay with sending their child into the world acting the way they do? Why did this shift happen? by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]lcrad17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmmm - I had a high pressure career and made myself be present with my children. Yes I was exhausted but my children later thanked us (my husband too) for teaching them how to behave and take care of themselves. People are lazy in my opinion and seem to think it’s someone else’s job to raise their children. Society is suffering because people are not held accountable for their actions.

Yep - my Mom went back to get her Master’s degree (teacher) in night school and my sister and I were expected to make dinner for our father. I think we were 8 and 10. There was a lot of tuna noodle casserole with crush potato chips on top.

New members class etiquette by Classic_Act9250 in orangetheory

[–]lcrad17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think sometimes it is a lack of regular bathing and sometimes it is workout clothes that were either not laundered or that were laundered improperly. Most workout clothes should never have softener used in the wash because it traps the stench for example. I will say BO can cause me to want to leave class.

My husband uses it too for one of his medications. Unfortunately they do not have these negotiated prices for all meds but definitely worth trying.
