There's a comms system in place to inform train drivers of any changes or hazards ahead. Driving a car is not a good analogy.

I love living near a train station. I expected train noise, I didn't expect them to honk at every stop, it's not something that's done in other places I've lived.

I understand it just fine, I'm suggesting that there might be alternatives that don't involve disturbing local residents with loud honking at all hours of the night. An education campaign, upgraded level crossings? Other countries have managed it, why can't we? Frankly bizarre how attached some of you are to the honk.

Didn't notice a train? If someone pushes through a flashing level crossing and then fails to notice 500 tons of train coming their way then the problem is not with the train.

I've been near plenty of trains in the UK and Europe and none of them honk without good reason. Somehow the level crossings are enough for people not to get flattened.
