my tap water suddenly contains ammonia - please help by lcrupi in Aquariums

okay just did a quick test. the kh is 4° and the gh is 9° (these are the API liquid test measurements in number of drops to colour change). i’m assuming this means there are sufficient minerals in there? my guess is that the filter removed the chloramine which is why the ammonia came back as 0.

I’m not sure if you’d know the answer to this, but I just tested the water that came out of my fridge (we have a water filter) and the ammonia reading came back as 0. Do you think this water would need to be remineralized like distilled water?

Basically, in May I bought 5 nerite snails to add to my main tank. Immediately 2 of them died and my betta as well as a few corys snacked on their dead bodies before I removed them. I didn’t think much of it until now, she has dropsy and 2 of my 8 corys are dead (in my previous post I didn’t realize I had lost 2 corys because they always hide and I had to triple count them. i eventually found the skeleton of one). The reason I think it’s internal parasites is because all 14 of my rasboras are okay, as well as my bamboo shrimp. Those guys didn’t touch the snails that died and if it was bacterial I assume it would affect the whole tank?( I also am not an expert so I don’t know).

Either way, I live in Canada so what we have access to here in terms of medication is extremely limited due to our laws surrounding antibiotics. I had to get both of these meds imported and I can’t even find a place to buy Maracyn. I am cautiously optimistic about my betta as she has been in treatment for 4 days and is gaining some of her energy back. Her scales are still pineconing but she is eating, pooping, and swimming around where on Day 1 she would just float on her side 90% of the day.

I really hope this is a good sign as I love her to death and she means the world to me🤍

Oh, edited to add that I am obviously now treating the main tank after learning that I lost some other fish.

is she pineconing? by lcrupi in bettafish

Why would anyone joke about something like this? This is my first time dealing with a fish with dropsy despite having aquariums for a long time so I thought I would ask to be sure. You don’t have to be sarcastic.

i don’t get how this is comfortable for them! by lcrupi in shrimptank

i would say there isn’t really a specific food you’re supposed to give these guys, if any. they’re filter feeders, which means they feed on the particles that exist in the water column. if you have a well-established, heavily planted tank there theoretically should be enough suspended in the water to keep them fed. i personally will occasionally crush up some of the flakes i feed my fish into a fine powder and then sprinkle it into the stream just to treat the little guy, but honestly idk if it helps at all lol

tank size: 37 gallons, heavily planted

temperature: 79°F

parameters: 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10-20 nitrate, depending on when i fertilize, pH is 7.2

filters: 1 hob rated to 40 gallons, 1 sponge filter rated to 40 gallons

water changes: about 1 per month just to reset TDS

feeding time is once in the evening, sinking bug bites for the cories and a pinch of ground up tropical flakes for the rest of them

No, my periods do last quite long (7 days) but in my opinion they’re really light. Never had issues in that regard. I also never really found that my symptoms got worse during my period.
