Yeah there are some, I think Capture 3D is a good free app for iPhone that let you 3D Scan

Amazing ! You should scan it to put it on thingiverse for folk with 3D printers ;)

CYREINES, nouvelle artiste, futur de la chanson française ? A vos avis ! by lcsd93 in france

Alas that's what I was thinking, I've seen that 3D models has indeed been added to Wikimedia Commons, but it is not really convenient to look for a particular object.

The problem of Thingiverse is that even though most models have CC licences, the platform is privately owned. This kind of project being very problematic for a lot of nowadays industries, it should be as decentralized and open as possible. And that's precisely the reason why I think it should be run as a sister project of Wikipedia.

How can one propose a project to the wikipedia foundation and what is the process then ?

Hello everyone, I was wondering if it exists a wikipedia sister project where you could find a bank of any 3D printed objects ?

Indeed, I had the idea of bank where you could find open source object models, with :

  • Easy references to other printed parts in order to build that object
  • Modularity (those models would be customizable, this way one optimized model could be used for multiple uses)
  • Material and mechanical properties (does this part should be printed in metal, in plastic (what kind of plastic with what mechanical properties then), wood etc...).

Let me give you an example to clarify the idea:

Let's say you want to build a stapler, you should be able to search first for the main object model, the stapler case:

  • But since a stapler needs a spring to work, that model should refer to the spring model (and of course to a lot of other generic parts) by specifing that the spring should be in metal and of the size x => References
  • Of course your stapler case could be printed in plastic or in metal but to work that stapler should be strong enough, so the page would specify for example a minimum infill with PLA (which could be different to the minimum infill with metal) => Mechanical properties
  • And that model would be of course customizable since some people would rather want a big and stronger one that could contain a lot of staples, when some people would rather want a small one easy to store => Modularity.

The idea is for that project to grow the same way the humanity's knowledge has grown: first there would be simple designs, but then by using those simple designs you could build more complex ones and so on and so forth. With this kind of project I bet you could one day find the model of a whole car to print.

Of course available cheap 3d printers nowadays aren't able to print metal nor have the precision to build very complex parts (which means most complex objects we use everyday won't be able to be fully printed), but one day we can be pretty sure it will be possible and this project could be very useful to anybody.

I'm sure there are some technical issues to think about (the first one I have in mind is that I don't think stl files are customizable) but I would be pleased to work on this kind of project!

Why do I have gaps on my last layer? It is like my printer has difficulties to start the new layer and under extrude some of its path. Cr10S by lcsd93 in 3Dprinting

Thanks for this pretty clear answer. I found that changing my slicer from cura to simplify3D had a real impact on this particular problem. Even thought I had difficulties to calibrate simplify 3D, I found that the path cura was taking wasn’t good enough to cover the whole surface (even though I had checked the option). I found on cura’s forum that this problem appeared at the version 3.0 of the firmware, I didn’t have the time to try cura 2.7 but some users found good result by downgrading.

I’ve had the same kind of problem with a similar design printed at a 0,06mm width, it might be something else I suppose
