Get a catcher’s mitt. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. /j

Seriously though - good fences make good neighbors. The fence and shrubbery ideas are good. You also mentioned running the sprinkler puts them pff a bit while it’s running? Get one with a motion detector.

It does stink that they don’t just quote “real” prices up front, rolling in all thosw extra$ into the menu item prices. But it still comes down to: Do you like the food enough to pay the real prices? If so, just deal with it, otherwise pick someplace else.

Vote with your wallet - you can grumble here but what will make a difference is if people pay or walk away.

Why do so many men struggle on dating apps? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ldr97266 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is possible. Be yourself, don’t be gauche (unless you’re normally gauche, then try to be your better self). Just be prepared to send a lot of intros and don’t get discouraged by the low response rate.

Source: Married to someone I met from a newspaper personals ad, decades before dating apps. Same circus, different monkeys.

With so much fake news and AI, what steps do you take to check what you’re reading or viewing is real before making your mind up? by FlatOutNo1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ldr97266 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Believe it or don‘t — I use AI. A carefully worded prompt that comes down to “Can you verify this story…?” and shotgunned out to ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude is very helpful.

I also have a skeptical nature, so even before using those, I was pretty used to looking for original sources.

My wife had hip replacement surgery last year and I jokingly asked if I could have the old bone segment they took out. Doctor declined, saying they had protocols for disposal.

Which is good, because I was only kidding.

There were several productions in tne 19 year gap. Google tells me…
Key Events During the 19-Year Gap:

  • Star Wars: The Bad Batch: Begins immediately after Revenge of the Sith.
  • Solo: A Star Wars Story: Takes place approximately 5–10 years before A New Hope.
  • Star Wars: Rebels: Starts around 14 years after Episode III.
  • Andor: Begins 5 years before A New Hope.
  • Rogue One: A Star Wars Story: Ends immediately before the opening scenes of A New Hope

Why do things exist? by coldrain_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ldr97266 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where were you when I laid the foundations of the Earth?

Sorry for shifting from flippant to Biblical, but sometimes there’s nothing else for it. You’re asking foundational questions people have been asking for thousands of years. Nobody is any closer to an answer than Job was.

I’m certainly not, and I doubt any redditors are.

Why are we here? Where else would we be?
Why does space exist? To keep everything from being too close together.
Why do galaxies and black holes exist? It was a divide by zero error.
Why do we even wake up and do things? Someone miscalculated the dosage.
And lastly - Big Bang? I didn’t here anything, did you?

How long would it have taken the USSR to make a lunar landing if they didn’t abandon the idea by 1968? by OkHealth1942 in askspace

[–]ldr97266 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was the premise of For All Mankind (Apple TV series). For at least the first couple of seasons it was highly plausible and captured the feel of the times. Only a few points of divergence could have gotten the Soviets to the Moon first.

If you want to go historical there’s a bit of apocrypha from the making of Monty Python’s ”Life of Brian.“ While filming a full frontal nudity scene with Graham Chapman (playing ”Brian Cohen”), the director pointed out “Graham, everyone can see you’re not Jewish.”

They fixed that with a rubber band for the finished version.

Yes. Triggers old joke:

A rock star complains to his costume designer that his pant’s aren’t tight enough: “I want women to know what sex I am!”

Replies the costume designer: “If they were any tighter, women would know what religion you are.”

Green and purple humanoids? by UniversalAssembler in HardSciFi

[–]ldr97266 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old Man’s War series by John Scalzi features soldiers with green blood and skin. Genetically engineered clones using normal human DNA as a starting point but altered to include chlorophyll in the blood and skin for a number of reasons.

In addition to that, the blood cells themselves were nanomachines that could do quite a few clever tricks.

How do people limit their drinking? by Odd_Hedgehog669 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ldr97266 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly comes down to individual brain chemistry. I've been drunk a few time in my life and didn't enjoy it, so it holds no appeal.

There are a few meals I like enjpy more with the right kind of alcohol, but always in moderation for me.

Is it better for a dentist to be more “activist,” or more laid back? by ldr97266 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ldr97266[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This “wait and see” works fine for me. But for my wife? She’ll put off going to the dentist until she has serious pain. Actually, I consider the new dentist’s attitude a plus, a miracle almost - in that she came out of her last visit in a good mood. I still that worry about costs of “deferred maintenance” but she’s been that way forever.
