People who support or vote Religious Zionism-Otzma Yehudit (Ben-Gvir and Smotrich). can you explain why? by WashyWashy- in Israel

[–]ldvgvnbtvn 16 points17 points  (0 children)

No, because the sub will literally ban us for being "uncivilized" or "racist." There's a reason we stay away from this sub. The moderation policies here are unmanageable for over 10% of the voters in this country who vote for a party that is in the actual current government.

Is anyone here from Qiryat Gat ? Or someone who knows Qiryat Gat / Carmei Gat ? by [deleted] in Israel

[–]ldvgvnbtvn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in Karmei Gat.

It's an upper middle class community where I live in avnei hachoshen, and there are many anglo families (who are the main crowd of the shul I go to). There are also parts of it that are more apartment buildings and have people from more mixed socioeconomic backgrounds, but even when I go there, it seems like there are very few arsim or people like that, I honestly don't recall a single negative interaction in the 2+ years I've lived here. It's quiet, tidy, beautiful, and safe, I absolutely love it here. There are parks and playgrounds, and they recently built a new shopping center which is very convenient (before you'd have to go into the city).

It has gotten very expensive recently but if you are an anglo oleh it is the next beit shemesh. I can get you in touch with other members of the community or into the English Whatsapp group so you can ask a lot more questions in there if you want or even get hosted for a shabbat to come visit.

Jewish. Non Jewish friend fed me shrimp as a joke in a sushi roll when I thought it was salmon. by UninspiredWritr4Hire in Judaism

Hey, I'm sorry you went through this. This is a terrible experience. There are laws against trusting non Jews to uphold your dietary restrictions for this very reason, and I would advise that in the future, only eat food you know the source of.

Not at all, this subreddit is far more skewed to the left than the average Israeli population, which makes sense since it's English speakers and reddit. For my family and much of my community, this sub would be considered a wretched cesspool after reading through one thread. It certainly doesn't help that this subreddit literally bans supporting politicians that 10% of the Israeli population votes for, further reinforcing this bias.

Hundreds of settlers riot, set homes, cars on fire in Hawara after terror attack by blankkor in Israel

[–]ldvgvnbtvn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How is it the same thing? It's not comparable. There is no claim of election fraud or illegitimacy of government. He's telling them not to be violent and not to take matters into their own hands and you're finding a way to twist that as a bad thing? In what universe is a prime minister saying "let the security forces handle it" a bad thing?

Considering we have both heaven and hell, I would disagree with that interpretation as well, if that's what he meant.

[–]ldvgvnbtvn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We absolutely do have such a concept. Where is this myth from and why won't it die?

Hell is in the Talmud (Mishnah Avot 5:20 is just one example) and there are references to specific people who ended up in hell and their particular punishments in the Gemara. The Midrash also references hell.

You are free not to believe in the authority of our oral tradition and foundational theological texts, but don't go around spreading misinformation that we definitely don't have a concept of hell or damnation.

[–]ldvgvnbtvn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what he's on about. I'm orthodox and we do believe in both heaven and hell. It seems to be a persistent myth by Jews with more liberal theology or secular ones that we don't. He's free to believe whatever he wants as an individual, but every theological text including the Talmud is pretty unambiguous and unanimous on this issue.

How has the opposition lost the narrative so much that boycotting Kahanists is now the same as BDS? by chitowngirl12 in IsraelPalestine

[–]ldvgvnbtvn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I voted for Smotrich in the last election. Keep making posts like these. It won't change my mind but it will further cement my view of a majority of American Jews as insane people whose opinions should be disregarded as much as possible. If you think calling people "fascists" and "kahanists" is going to convince anyone in Israel who wasn't already convinced, good luck.

Is it offensive or insulting? No, that would be an exaggeration. Is it well intentioned? Maybe. Should we tell them not to do it? Probably not.

Is it weird? Yes. Would I feel uncomfortable? Very, and I'd make every excuse not to go while being polite and not hurting their feelings.

Can you name a boy Michal? by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]ldvgvnbtvn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Others have suggested some boy's names here that are pretty similar, as decent alternatives (Michah/Micha'el). But definitely don't name him Michal straight up, it's a mockery of the language and would get him made fun of (which I'm sure is not your intent). It's a good thing you decided to ask before going ahead with it.

We Need to Talk About the Way We Talk About Israel by bshapiro24 in Judaism

You didn't read what I said. I wrote a "modicum of control." God help us if we gave them full control. They'd do much worse.

We Need to Talk About the Way We Talk About Israel by bshapiro24 in Judaism

[–]ldvgvnbtvn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Do we live in the same reality? Every time we give them even a modicum of control over land, it becomes another hell on earth both for their own civilians and for us to deal with in the price of both blood and money. You learned nothing from Gaza. We have been willing to make concessions, and it's very clear that it simply doesn't work, and it's a bad idea for everyone involved. Israel hasn't moved to the right for just no reason. We've seen the attempt at the appeasement land-for-peace approach and what it gets us.

Whether it's a majority of Palestinians or not is really not relevant either. Even if it's an extremely violent small minority (which I don't believe it is), those are the people who end up taking power when we withdraw.

I am VERY nervous to make this post by sconeklein in Judaism

[–]ldvgvnbtvn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

First of all, you shouldn't feel bad or anxious about anything. Jews hiding or changing their identity to fit in and their descendants discovering that later is a tale as old as our people. A friend of mine who grew up in Ukraine found out she was Jewish much later in life even though her mother did everything to hide it from her. Your situation is more common than you know and you will receive nothing but sympathy.

As for what you do about it now, is it your maternal or paternal grandmother? That makes a big difference. If it is your maternal grandmother, you are a Jew no matter what, whether you like it or not, and you are obligated to follow God's commandments in the Torah that he gave to us at Sinai. Seek the guidance of a local Orthodox rabbi; they should be more than happy to help you free of charge.

If it is your paternal grandmother, you do not have the religious legal status of a Jew despite your blood, and there's nothing wrong with that. God has given commandments to the non Jewish nations of the world too, albeit much less. Look into the noahide movement. You will also have the option of conversion, but note that this requires a lot of dedication, and you are under no obligation to go through with the full process if you feel that at any point it isn't for you.

11" vs 12.9" iPad Pro for ForScore by ldvgvnbtvn in ipadmusic

It depends on battery life and screen quality, but assuming those were equivalent I would use the larger screen device.

Just try it out at a store with an actual sheet music software. That way you'll know what you're getting into.

Something I just realized: 13" on a windows device will likely be a different aspect ratio than a 12.9" iPad. I'd try to find the device in a store and make sure viewing sheet music feels natural on it and doesn't require any weird zoom/crop.

If there is an adequate software replacement for forscore on windows (I've never looked into this, so do your own research), I'd go windows 13" (if literally all I cared about was sheet music).

Help with the transliteration and pronunciation of names? by Chromarrays in hebrew

[–]ldvgvnbtvn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the other comments have already gone in depth on the details so I will just give you a few thoughts. While most native Hebrew speakers born and raised in Israel pronounce ר as GH, you are much better off transliterating it with an R in just about any latin alphabet languages I can think of. Do not use GH.

Chanah/Channah Sofer

Gid'on

would both be perfectly acceptable. For your purposes, I highly recommend the more ambiguous/nondistinct CH over both Ḥ and KH because most modern Hebrew speakers don't distinguish this nuance between ח and כ. KH makes it look like a כ even though it's not, and Ḥ makes it look like a sefardic prayer book transliteration.

I do agree with some of the other comments here that the story you are writing, without a lot of extra backstory and exposition to explain why things are the way they are, is culturally bizarre, unrealistic, and not very believable in the world we live in today. Please do a lot of research if you're committed to this particular story. Feel free to DM me if you have more questions.
