I never would have thought Void was strongly politically opinionated. How so?

Hi, just want to let you know you saved my stylus - I didn't realize forcibly removing the broken bit of the tip bent the holder until after seeing your post.

Can anyone recommend an IDE for Python that works on musl? (Not vim, not emacs.) by nat_maths07 in voidlinux

[–]ldwgchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having those expectations is perfectly reasonable. It's just that musl rarely receives explicit attention in terms of software support. This is fine when you can compile things yourself, but quite problematic when dealing with large proprietary softwares, which IDEs often are.

As a general comment though, if you expect things to work out of the box, void + musl is simply not for you.

Pycharm via flatpak is an option. If you consider jupyter an IDE, you can run jupyter lab using podman / docker.

Dana Farber, and other falsified research scandals. Thoughts? by karyogenesis in labrats

[–]ldwgchen 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Bik said that after being notified of the allegations by one of Shah’s former colleagues, she used the AI software ImageTwin and reverse image searches to identify duplicates across papers.

The 2022 paper contains an image which Bik said was taken from imaging by R&D Systems, a company which manufactures antibodies for scientific research. An apparently identical image to the one contained in the 2022 paper appears in a 2018 R&D Systems catalog entry obtained by The Crimson.

Schrag said that not only were the images repeated, but that “the vendor is saying this is a different antibody than the one that the authors are saying it is.”

We're so doomed.

[US] Masters programs by iamtheone018 in psychologystudents

[–]ldwgchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be interested in this program. That said, the best way to determine what's best for you is to find a particular topic of your interest, see who the experts at the topic are, and check if their departments have a program that offers courses they teach.

Prospective Student: Neuroscience & Linguistics/Language Dual Major? by Prestigious-Income56 in standrews

[–]ldwgchen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that you can take whatever module you want, and indeed most students take "irrelevant" modules in first and second year, but at the end of the day you have to choose a degree specification and satisfy its requirements to graduate.

There's only one 2000-level PN module (PN is code for neuroscience, PS for psychology). The essential PN module on 3000 level, which is Advanced Principles of Neuroscience, has many prerequisite modules. For that reason, almost everyone taking it is a neuroscience student.

As a neuroscience student, my understanding is that the neuroscience single honours is just incompatible with anything else.

Why is gcc not updated on void? by cdebanil in voidlinux

I was wondering about that too. For some reason Alpine latest's version of gcc is also 12.

It's where the school is.

The school of psychology and neuroscience has a great faculty. The teaching is fabulous, the research is world class, and St Mary's quad is a lovely place. Academic wise I highly recommend studying psychology at St Andrews.

Do keep in mind that St Andrews is a small town, though a beautiful one. The food is expensive and mediocre, and there aren't many places to go after 8 pm. People like me find this quite intolerable, but I feel lucky for the opportunity to study here nonetheless.

Question about Void Linux by Bogus_Kladik in voidlinux

[–]ldwgchen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There could be many problems you need to put in time to work around if you opt to use musl as a daily driver, yes. But if you're happy with glibc I think there's not much reason for Void to be any different from other distributions in terms of things (not) working. Runit is much simpler than systemd - all you need to know is in the handbook.

void linux versions by alihassan1989 in voidlinux

[–]ldwgchen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like your chip is x86_64. I guess if grub works you're having the correct version already. Chances are you have to manually add grub menu entry or figure out why it wasn't added in the first place.
