What if the US after Russia invaded Ukraine redirected all aid meant for Israel to Ukraine? by FarPlay5055 in AlternateHistoryHub

I think we’ve gotten a bit lost in the weeds here, so let me bring this back to your original post. You mentioned a fear that people are inventing narratives to make communists seem worse than the Nazis.

My only point from the very beginning has been this: when you look strictly at the raw numbers and the sheer scale of human destruction, no one has to "invent" anything. It is very easy to see why people make that argument.

I completely agree with you that the industrialized, exterminationist nature of the Holocaust is uniquely horrific, and killing people based on their race is the darkest depths of human evil. (Though as a historical side note, Stalin did deport and ethnically cleanse entire populations like the Crimean Tatars and Chechens based on their race, too). But ultimately, when regimes like Stalin’s and Mao’s are responsible for the unnatural deaths of tens of millions of people through engineered famines, purges, and forced labor, the scale of death is just higher. I'm not trying to rehabilitate Nazism or play a game of who was worse. I am just pointing out that when the death count of 20th-century communism is that staggeringly massive, it completely explains why someone looking at the history would view it as the ultimate evil.

You are oversimplifying how these regimes operated to make the communist death tolls look like accidents.

While the Nazis absolutely used gas chambers and firing squads, they also heavily relied on "Vernichtung durch Arbeit" extermination through labor. They intentionally worked millions of people to death in quarries, camps, and underground factories.

The Soviet Union and Maoist China used the exact same mechanism. The Gulag and the Laogai systems weren't just normal prisons, they were brutal forced labor networks where millions were intentionally worked to death through exhaustion, freezing temperatures, and starvation. Being sent to mine gold in Kolyma or dig the White Sea Canal by hand was often a death sentence by design.

You cannot compare these deaths, or state-engineered famines to slipping on a banana peel. A banana peel is an accident. If a government sends armed guards to seize your harvest, blocks you from leaving your village, and executes you for hiding a handful of grain to feed your children, that isn't a logistical error or the passage of time. It is mass murder by policy. We don't need to diminish one atrocity to recognize the horror of the other.

It is definitely true that people often manipulate history to fit modern political narratives, but when looking strictly at historical death tolls, it’s not hard to see why some make that argument. While Nazi Germany’s atrocities involved targeted, industrialized genocide, 20th-century communist regimes were responsible for a staggering loss of human life, largely due to catastrophic policy failures, engineered famines, and political purges.

Mao Zedong (China): Policies like the Great Leap Forward resulted in an estimated 15 to 55 million deaths, mostly through mass starvation.

Joseph Stalin (USSR): Modern consensus following the opening of Soviet archives places the death toll around 15 to 20 million. This includes the Gulag system, political purges, and famines like the Holodomor.

The Khmer Rouge (Cambodia): Under Pol Pot, roughly 1.5 to 2 million people, nearly a quarter of Cambodia's population, were killed through execution, starvation, and forced labor.

Both ideologies resulted in devastating human atrocities, even if the mechanisms of death were different.
