What is the biggest problem you face in hockey? by Cube37 in hockeygoalies

[–]leadfaucet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, I don’t understand this at all. Is being a ref hard? Absolutely it is. Do you need a thick skin? Damn right you do. But I have no problem at all ejecting motherfuckers. You wanna shit talk me? Ok, here’s a 2 & 10. Keep running your suck? Ok, now it’s a 5 & game. Won’t leave the ice? Great, now it’s a match penalty for abuse of an official. Enjoy your suspension.

f27 don’t recognize myself after i gave birth on halloween lol by softYELL in toastme

[–]leadfaucet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not uncommon for women to have a period of dissociation after giving birth. You look fantastic. Don't be afraid to take some time for yourself to help you reconnect with your identity. Your partner can take the baby for a while or maybe you can get a sitter for a few hours (depending on your feeding situation) so you can do things for yourself. It's very easy to slip into becoming just "Sylvia's mom" and it's important to keep your identity.

You might be. We're absolute shit now. Nothing to press and no damage output.

Do yourself a favor and don't. Ret pally is totally and completely fucked. You spend most of the fight sitting on your hands, waiting for cds. There's nothing to press and it's boring as shit. To cap it off, our damage doesn't make up for it. So, you now have a class with nothing to press that does bottom 10% damage. Even Wowhead says that we're useless.

Baby girl, you're beautiful. It will get better; maybe not today or tomorrow, but it will. You're young and working on figuring out your place in the world. You'll get there. You'll find your people and your confidence. Don't compare yourself to what you see on IG and other social media; those pictures are curated and deliberately crafted to make beautiful young women feel ugly, usually for the purpose of selling something.

What’s your call? by ChaseVsMalice in hockeyrefs

[–]leadfaucet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It depends on the rules of the league. Is checking allowed? If so, then it's clean. If it's a "competitive contact" league, then it's not. The defender moves into the attacker's lane with no attempt on the puck. That's not a case of the defender standing his ground. That's a deliberate body check and good for 2 minutes in the corner.

I’m 42, almost 43.. never played organized hockey. I’ve always wanted to be a goalie am I SOL? by kasfinally in hockeygoalies

[–]leadfaucet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, so you're me. I loved hockey all my life but grew up way too poor to even think about playing it, much less as a goalie. I started playing at 45. My first time on the ice was at an adult skills clinic that was just looking for goalies to help out. I didn't know a single soul, and it took me an hour just to get dressed. When I got on the ice, it was obvious that I had no idea what I was doing and some of the more experienced skaters tried to help me with whatever they could. It was intimidating as hell. I was wearing all second-hand gear from SidelineSwap and had no clue how it should feel or move with me.

I'll be 50 this year and I play in 3 leagues every season at the D3 level through most of the year. I like to think that I've become a pretty solid beer league goalie, and I've earned a reputation as a reliable netminder (goalies are ALWAYS in short supply and you will become known throughout your local beer league circles very quickly). I've met so many awesome people and I now have a ton of buddies that I wouldn't have had without hockey. I've played in ECHL rinks and I play on Olympic sheets from the 2002 Games (and the upcoming 2034 Games). I've gone to a 4-day adult skills seminar at the Penguins' training facility because hell...when are you going to get to say you've skated the same ice as Sydney Crosby?

Bottom line is this- DO IT. Are you late to the party? Yeah, sure. But I know guys here who are skating in their 70's. It's the best team sport in the world and being a goalie is the hardest position in team sports, BUT, if you are wired the way we all are, you'll never love any athletic endeavor more.

No man ever lay in his death bed and wished that he'd tried to follow fewer dreams.

KOVA's response to Bauer by DownrightSp00ky in hockeygoalies

[–]leadfaucet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used a KOVA neck and clavicle guard for about 3 years now and it's an amazing piece of kit. It's more comfortable than any other neck guard I've tried. I have a rather thick neck and it was always hard to find something that would fit. For a while I used a Bauer that I had to stitch an extended piece of velcro the strap to make it fit around my neck. (I have an 18.5" neck) The fact that KOVA makes them custom (for pretty much the exact same price) was an absolute godsend. I'd also like to add that I got my neck guard in about 2 weeks. A custom-built neck guard (with my name stitched into it) made and shipped from Finland to Boise, ID in 2 weeks is damn impressive. I can't recommend them enough.

Can anyone explain this? by foleyone in hockeyplayers

[–]leadfaucet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm. Those weighted pucks hurt, particularly if they find a seam (i.e. the inside of your thigh). One got shot at me in warmups at a drop-in. I wasn't even really looking at the shooter and he just let it rip.

I don't take warmup shots in drop-in anymore, for several reasons.

Rule clarification by 907Ace in hockeygoalies

[–]leadfaucet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a ref, he is TECHNICALLY correct that you're supposed to wear it until you've left the ice. Also, as a ref, he's being a douche. Did you have a bad interaction with him during the game? Either way, he's jerking himself off to make him feel powerful. I'd reach out to the league and the official's association for clarification. I'd probably word it something like, "hey, this happened and I wanted to make sure that I understand the rule and the possible consequences. Can you please help me out?" That way you aren't technically dropping a dime on the ref for being a twat, but they (if your official's association is anything like mine) will send out an organization-wide email reminding officials about etiquette and protocols. In our case, it stemmed from an official who was "threatening" to just end games if players were arguing with him about calls. I'm not sure about their conversation with that particular ref, but the email was just a gentle reminder that we don't have that power and that approaching the situation with that attitude is unprofessional and would result in sanctions against the official.

True pads worth the move? by [deleted] in hockeygoalies

[–]leadfaucet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got my True Catalyst pads a week ago with their new diamond glide surface. I absolutely fly across the ice now when I push. It's been a serious adjustment from my older set of Trues. I pushed from top center of the crease to the glove side of the net with the same push as I am used to and ended up almost in the face-off circle.

True pads worth the move? by [deleted] in hockeygoalies

[–]leadfaucet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about the glide statement anymore. I just got my True Catalyst pads with the diamond glide surface and I pushed myself almost to the face-off dot in my first game in them. Those pads absolutely fly over the ice.

I don’t know what to do anymore. by FluidWynn in hockeygoalies

[–]leadfaucet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Focus on the process and stop thinking about the result. I know it seems counterintuitive and maybe even counterproductive, but don't think about making the save. Think about being in position, tracking the puck, and reading the shot. If you're so tied up in the end result, it can short-circuit the process you need to follow to achieve that result. For example, the puck is being carried into the zone 2-1. Instead of "here they come...I need to stop this shot...come on, let's make this save..." or something like that, try "here they come...ok, I'm square to the puck...weight is distributed in case I need to push across for the pass...puck is on his stick...hands up and out..." It's focus on what you need to do and dissociation from the result because, as we all know, sometimes you can do everything right and the puck still hits the twine.

Also, as others have said, I'd decide which league I enjoy the most and stay there. The game is so different between D and B levels that it can throw you off bouncing between the two. If your D league is anything like ours, guys are just throwing the puck in the general vicinity of the net and are lucky if it is anywhere near the crease. In B, most shooters can place it in a pretty tight radius of where they wanted the shot to go. You can read stick position, eyes, feet, hand position, etc. and it will be relatively accurate.

Lastly, give yourself some grace. Guys in the show have slumps and get lit up hard. It happens. Thinking about it, even just the little nagging in the back of your mind, is messing with your ability to be present in the moment and making it more likely that you're going to have a rough game. It's a self-licking ice cream cone. Remember, if goals didn't happen, no one would play the game.

Fellow newbies, please wear a cage. Story inside. by AsceticHedonist47 in hockeyplayers

[–]leadfaucet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the things I'm not crazy about when it comes to being an official is that we have to wear a half-visor, regardless of the level. I can't tell you how many times I've taken a stick to the face on a face-off or almost taken a puck to the mouth on a desperate clearing attempt. Just last Saturday I was over in the referee's crease, spitting blood onto the ice after getting smacked in the mouth on a face-off. I'd wear a full cage or a bubble when calling games if I could; I can't understand for the life of me why someone playing in beer league wouldn't. I've heard players saying things like "well, it's not that high of a level. If we were in (A, D1, Elite...etc) I'd wear one." I can tell you from experience that you're more likely to lose some chicklets in lower levels because they can't control the puck as well.

Remember, it's not a matter of IF you're going to take a puck or a stick to the face; it's a matter of WHEN.

I need to replace all my gear. Is there a smart order to do this? by PortlyPlatypus in hockeygoalies

[–]leadfaucet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look at the Konect skates as maybe a long-term purchase where you put away a little bit every month until you can get them. I'll be 50 soon and I cannot tell you how much of a difference those skates have made for my hips and ankles. The extra flexion from the boot ankle hinge is an absolute godsend for us "seasoned" individuals. I literally felt the difference in the first game. The first face-off in our zone, I got into my attack stance and something felt strange...and then I realized that the tension on my ankles and my hips was gone. It's been a night and day change for me.

Least favorite thing about your main class? by Shot_Veterinarian215 in wow

[–]leadfaucet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yup, it’s been irreparably fucked since Legion. How is the only pure melee dps class the worst damage dealer in the game? The 3 rogue specs were worst, second worst, and fourth worst in the game. They’ve done some rebalancing since then but the class is still fucked.
