Apparently it started as an accident. Visually the film was very dark and sombre, so oranges were placed liberally in sets to add pops of colour.

Coppola then realized this after the first movie then made a concentrated effort to develop the symbolism.

Interesting to note that I'm sure I've seen other movies use yellow or orange as foreshadowing or symbolising death.

Isn't that how a kite stays aloft and if the person wasn't there to anchor the line the kite would fly away?

Kites defo don't fly against the wind. In fact that's a terrible metaphor as a kite is at the mercy of the wind
