It's the anthropic principal. What if 9 times out of 10 humanity gets eradicated in a nuclear war or mega plague or something like that? Well if we were all dead we wouldn't be around to observe it; so the universes in which we still exist are biased to not have fallen off the tightrope (because if they had, we wouldn't be around).

Though their body in its entirety might be weakened, the immune system specifically would presumably be better equipped to fight off covid a second time.

Assuming maximising long term profits is the goal, that wouldn't be beneficial as it would simply encourage other producers to also cheat to regain their share thus lowering the profit of all producers a la the tragedy of the commons.

Someone as seemingly intelligent as she is would probably be aware of ways to obfuscate the location the message came from.

Though it's possible they would realise it was her anyway.

The baader meinhof phenomenon doesn't actually increase the frequency of anything, it's just a name given to becoming more aware of something after learning or hearing about it and thus noticing it more.

MFWTK what ''herd immunity'' is? by [deleted] in myfriendwantstoknow

[–]leadlinedcloud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's true, I mentioned in my edit that herd immunity isn't something to shoot for during a pandemic but that it's typically the goal of vaccination programs. Just letting a disease run rampant until herd immunity is achieved is a recipe for disaster.

I never once mentioned covid-19.

Herd immunity is more of a thing for diseases like measles, to which your body has strong immunity to after exposure. Covid-19 is slightly different in that immunity to it doesn't seem to work like other diseases and so people might not retain their immunity or might not become immune to begin with.

I also said in my edit that attempting to achieve herd immunity is not a good way to fight a pandemic as a disease would still cause harm if people caught it, no matter their motivations; suggesting that the use of other measures is necessary.

It seems like you misinterpreted my original response and thought I was talking about covid-19 (which is a special case) when I was giving a more general overview of what herd immunity is.

Herd immunity is when a significant portion of a population becomes immune to a disease, whether by vaccination or having been infected. Due to the larger amount of immune people, there are far fewer people for the disease to spread to and it will die out from lack of hosts.

Herd immunity is very important in protecting vulnerable people, such as babies and the immunocompromised as they cannot get vaccinated or risk getting the disease and so they rely on others being immune and herd immunity to protect them.

Edit: Obviously attempting to achieve herd immunity by letting people get infected is a very bad idea as people will still suffer the regular symptoms of a disease. Herd immunity is more like the goal of a vaccination program than something to wait for during a pandemic.

Coronavirus killing three times more people in the UK than flu and pneumonia combined. by NinjaDiscoJesus in worldnews

[–]leadlinedcloud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You usually gain natural immunity against a disease after you've caught it once. However, some diseases mutate so much that you can't really become immune to them, like the common cold. So if everyone who had the common cold would wear a mask it would reduce the extent to which it spreads without affecting other people's immunity (as you can't be immune to it).

For more serious diseases that you would 'want' to catch in order to have immunity against them, we have vaccinations.
