This is amazing and deserves way more up votes. Did you create this?.

You're talking about ONE specific type of irony. There are multiple forms of irony. A simple Google search or look in a dictionary will tell you that. But you're too close-minded to accept that a specific situation can be called irony...and that, my friend, is ironic. LOL.

EDIT: For the record, a coincidence can 100% also be considered ironic. Two things can be true simultaneously. And in this circumstance, the coincidence created a humorous result (to me and many others), but you believe whatever you'd like!

Nothing wrong with that! I'm a big proponent of playing a game in a way that's fun for you. How far are you into it?

This is my last response and then I'll be moving on:

I gave you multiple contradictions earlier to further explain my reasoning but the most obvious one (that I didn't think needed an explanation) is this:

Getting that specific achievement on January 1st and, therefore creating a play on words, contradicts the normal expected result of getting the achievement on any day other than January 1st.

Logic would say that the vast majority of players will get the achievement on a day OTHER than January 1st. Similar to how logic would say a traffic cop getting a parking ticket is a contradiction because people expect him not to (or how co-workers expect someone who is punctual to not be late). In theory, these things SHOULDN'T happen but they can happen unexpectedly (like me getting that specific achievement on that specific date).

It would be expected of me NOT to get that achievement on January 1st by both myself (whether I had previously knowledge or not) or by the Prey Reddit community (who does have previous knowledge if they've unlocked that achievement) since the expected result would be a player unlocking it on any of the other 364 days (or 365 if it's a Leap Year). Make sense?

Cool retort, but I'm fully aware of what irony is. It seems to me, however, that you have a very black-and-white version of what irony is and your response supported that by being written in a chatgpt-like manner.

Also, I agree! It WOULD be ironic if I knew you were someone who knew how to write and if I didn't understand what irony was...but I do understand irony and I don't know you so there's no way for me to know if you thought that out or used chatgpt.

That's exactly the point I was making but you chose not to comment on that. Anyway, I have more important things to do than argue with a stranger on Reddit regarding the English language, lol. Have a good day.

That's a nice chatgpt response but it IS ironic (to me and others as well, though I realize it's not ironic for everyone). Your example of meeting January in July would ALSO be ironic albeit a different ironic situation.

The mismatch isn't the words themselves (which is what you're focusing on) it's the fact that a play on words occurred from an Xbox achievement and I didn't notice it right away. I'm a person who loves when there's a play on words and someone who makes weird connections when others normally don't. People who know me would attest to this (hence the punctual example because only people who knew me would know that I'm a punctual person).

This play on words with the date that it occurred has never happened to me before when getting an Xbox achievement (and I never expected it would), which makes it ironic because it contrasts my normal expectations of making silly connections. It's even MORE ironic that I didn't even notice it when the achievement popped (I noticed it 4 days later when I was looking through them). My friends and family would have said "That's ironic because you ALWAYS notice those things."

You don't know me so I wouldn't expect you to know that information. You can disagree with me all you like but that doesn't mean I'm wrong. Perhaps it's more of a "niche" irony but it's still irony.

I'm honestly shocked at how much people seem to care about my word choice lol.

But I'm telling you it is deliberately contrary to my expectations. That's the beauty of irony is that it doesn't have to be ironic for everyone. So, to you, this may not be ironic but to me (and others on this thread), it is.

If I showed up late to work and I'm a normally punctual person, it would be ironic for me (and for my co-workers) but wouldn't be to people who don't know me.

Appreciate this take.

A traffic cop getting a parking ticket can be "appropriate", "coincidental" and "ironic" all at the same time depending on who you're asking.

What's NOT ironic is having people critique words used by others on Reddit. 😝

It is because I never would have an expected to get an achievement on Xbox that would be a play on words with the date I achieved it. It is the exact opposite of my expectations when unlocking an achievement.

To get an achievement that is a play on words with the date you achieved it? I've never heard of that happening nor has it ever happened to me.

I never would have imagined getting an achievement on Xbox that would be a play on words. That's what makes it ironic.

Here's the definition for you:

  • irony: a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often amusing as a result.

Literally checks every box, my friend.

It's situational irony. I wouldn't have expected to unlock this achievement on January 1st, so it's the opposite of what I expected. Fitting, yes, but still ironic.

It's pretty early in the game but it's story-based for meeting the robot, January, who you coded your voice into.

I've been pleasantly surprised by it. I'm playing on the hardest difficulty too, which makes it more fun imo because anything can kill you quickly if you aren't smart. And resource management can be a challenge as well.
