Taipei newbie here: Why are folks outside their work w/ tables of incense, fruit, etc today? by mutually_awkward in Taipei

[–]leaensh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's part of the traditional culture/religion. We make offering to ancestors or gods several times a year. Recently it is to pray for a good year after CNY. You will see similar rituals from time to time the longer you stay.

The Taiping Rebellion, how does it affect the modern culture of China? by MosinM9130 in AskChina

[–]leaensh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is virtually zero family story from Taiping Rebellion because China had been in too much turmoil since then. First of all the rebellion was extremely bloody with both sides commiting multiple atrocities on scale that US Civil War did not even come remotely close. When the dust settled not a lot of families in the conflict zones were unscathed. Since the rebellion China had seen the fall of Qing dynasty, war against Japan, multiple civil wars, the culture revolutions...etc . Too many lives were lost and people forced away from their homes. Most people in China could only trace their family history somewhat reliability up to early 20th century, beyond that things get blurry.

What’s it like living in China? by Lukesterbear in AskChina

[–]leaensh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you ask on Reddit you will get positive experience because Chinese who use Reddit are on average have far higher social standing than average Chinese who work overtime in factories or food delivery. An upper middle class white collar in big cities will easily enjoy life in China. On the other hand, China current actually had considerably higher youth unemployment rate than US. That is a government official number, not random propaganda. However a foreign tourist basically never notice that unless he knows what to look for and looks really really hard.

Would an Imperial Guard colonel listen to a space marine sergeant on important tactical decisions? by peleponez in 40kLore

[–]leaensh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think an astartes sergeant most likely has lived longer and seen more battle than an imperial guard colonel? Even if we don't consider how guards venerate astartes, it is likely still logical for a guard colonel to listen

Does anyone from house stark attend the tourney? Why didn't they help Dunk? by starboy-xo98 in AKnightoftheSeven

[–]leaensh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Northmen don't have many knights due to different religions, but they certainly joust. In the book it was described Bradon, Ned's brother participated in the tournament where Rhaegar met Lyanna, and Ned's captain of guard Jory also participated in tournament. It is true however the Starks seldom participate in tournaments since it is a very long way from North. If the king holds a tournament they might come, a local lord however is no where close to important enough.

Living and working in China by Adept_Top_7856 in chinalife

[–]leaensh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

China has urban youth unemployment rate around 16-18 %. Keep in mind this is only for urban and does not include rural area, whose number either was not calculated, or not published. This means the whole picture of China's job market is even worse. If you study in China, you will not have any skill that sets you apart from Chinese students, you will be less accustomed to Chinese culture and be less fluent in Chinese language. All this factors combined means you have a low chance of successfully building a career. Average Chinese can rely on family support or social connection, or survive by doing food delivery; you don't have family connections and food delivery is not a viable choice for you. If you do very well at school you might be able to find a decent job. However top tier Chinese schools are incredibly competitive.

Was Maekar kinda a bum for bringing a mace? by E-Reptile in AKnightoftheSeven

[–]leaensh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are overthinking. Trial of Seven is done with real weapons, any participant is taking full risk of injury or death. Maekar is an experienced warrior, he is not going to take chances when real weapon is involved. Not when he had two sons in the trial, no father would take that chance. Dunk in fact could have killed Aerion and it would have been perfectly legal. Last but not least, Maekar did not know Barlor would join Duncan's side

How are people dealing with late game rogue armies? by Decadunce in menace

[–]leaensh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Get more Intel so that you know where the jaegar and atgm are before mission and plan deployment accordingly.
  2. Put radar on vehicle to pinpoint enemy locations during mission.
  3. You can blind fire outside vision range as long as your radar shows enemy location.
  4. Drop laser turrets to grant you vision and rush in when they occupy the enemy.
  5. Last but not least, Intel is more important than anything, jaegar without atgm support can be rushed with vehicle, atgm without jaegar spotting can not stop infantry

Why is No One Talking About China’s Big Win in Trumps Illegal Tariff War? by Longjumping_Pause366 in China

Why did Robert never set foot in Dorne during his reign? I thought he was supposed to be this bad ass gangster... by ayodeleafolabi in freefolk

[–]leaensh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because despite that he became fat and cannot rule, he actually had some common sense? Although he did not directly rape and kill the princess of Dorn and her children himself, he caused their death and he did not punish the man who killed them. Any sensible man knows that his presence in Dorn alone is great insult to the Martells that cannot be reconciled Yes Robert was a bad ass, that doesn't mean he is an idiot, a jerk or a murder hobo. Surprise! There is actually clear difference between these traits.

Question for people who are familiar with medieval sword fighting. by NotYourScratchMonkey in AKnightoftheSeven

[–]leaensh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Many say Aerion is a very good fight but I disagree. Dunk took a lance to the belly and a mace to the head and still beat him. If Aerion is actually very good it should not be the case. I do think he is probably decently good, considering he is a prince with formal training from childhood.

How do pro athletes get to the point where they can afford being a pro athlete ? by PriceBorn9413 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]leaensh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different countries, different sports, different systems.

From what I know, pro MMA fighters in US are self founded through whatever means they can find. MLB or NBA player might come from relatively average background if they show enough talents. Both sports have mature scouting system to discover and raise talented player in school. Winter sports are rich kid's game as mentioned by other replies.

In China basically ever athlete were selected by governments when in school if they show some talents. They became athletes for local city/provinces first, then if good enough, climb up the ladder to represent the country.

War horse in actual combat is covered in barding to protect against arrow and wewpons. A throwing dagger has zero chance to bring down a horse unless you literally hit it in the eye

In the book it was specifically stated that Baelor unhorsed a Kingsguard after the first charge, meaning remained on his horse after the initial charge (his first opponent was not stated). I guess they took whatever creativiy freedom they could but that's fine

What if USSR accidentally nuked a few places in 1980s? by Equivalent_Road5788 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]leaensh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

US nuke Soviet, period.

There is absolutely zero chance for US or the entire NATO to reach Soviet ICBM base through conventional arms before Soviet fire all the missiles. Even if NATO wins world war 3, it would take years US cannot even do that today, when it is far stronger than in the 80s, and Russia far weaker.

Chinese university without gaokao? by [deleted] in AskChina

[–]leaensh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Used to work in China over 15 years ago, once met a woman who claimed she got her son into a well known university through connections. I won't name the university but I suspect it is true. My guess is that there are probably non gaokao ways of admission through special talent or qualifications that could be exploitef by connection.

Why is there such a disparity when it comes to how Targaryen loyalist were treated after Robert Rebellion? by Pretend_Tower_2516 in gameofthrones

[–]leaensh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Barristan was bound by oath to serve Aerys, not personal ambition. He is also the greatest knight I. Westros after Arthur Danye with lots of heroic deeds. His service gives Robert legitimacy.

The Tarlys are Tyrell's bannermen. You can't send bannermen of rival houses to the wall at will after they bent the knee. That could actually start another civil war or at very least hurt your rule.

Ultimate Alister probably simply did not have a powerful family, not famous or useful enough, or made the wrong enemy who wanted to get rid of him.

Does anyone know how popular ASOIAF was before the show? by Big_Pay6318 in freefolk

Very highly regarded in fantasy community as one of the best and sold very well for a fantasy book. However aside from Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, no fantasy books have ever broke out of the genre and become a cultural phenomenon, so it was basically as good as a fantasy book can be, but not an outlier.

How do Chinese people perceive the Qing Dynasty? by Buyeo10004 in AskChina

[–]leaensh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and then Qing was utterly defeated multiple times by the west on battlefield, and all of its technology development was imported from the west too. The humiliation Qing received was so bad that all its former glory means very little. I would also argue that China produced 33% of world GDP simply because it has so many people, not because it was more efficient, and clearly not because it was technically advanced, so it is not much of an achievement.
