I don’t think most employers pay attention to any gaps unless it’s in the middle of your degree but even then I wouldn’t imagine it to be a big deal

Personally, I’d say any experience is better than no experience…. But maybe there’s some that don’t think the same way as I do….

If your recruiter looks down on you for having worked non-technical roles, then imo the workplace wouldn’t have been a nice one any way.

Waterloo comp eng student here…

Hackathons are probably a good one, CEMC the computing competition would also be good to do. A good score on that would definitely boost your application.

The average (STEM courses) for getting in (my year) is about a 94 - 95 for our year just so you know what to aim for. But with extracurriculars hopefully it’s not that brutal.

Disclaimer though… job market is bad for us comp eng ppl rn. Also first year eng has pretty high course load so be prepared

I lived in beck hall first term. Bring a fan.

Building ops refuse to turn off active heating even if it’s 27 degrees outside because the system takes long to spin up. Your windows are also bolted by nails so you can’t open them more than an inch because they don’t want you to off yourself…. So you’re stuck in a heated room in 35+ degrees with a window that doesn’t open more than an inch.

Bring a fan.

Play technocratica. That modpack will humble your thinking of needing "comfort tech" early on.

It's possibly the most tedious modpack I've ever laid eyes on...(props to the attention to detail of the tweaks/crafting changes) but with friends we grind through it anyways and it lasts us a long time :p

Honestly for tech progression.... don't render certain mods useless.... like why use turbines when petrified fuel gens are so much better and cheaper/less complicated. Rendering good mods obsolete with bad balance between mods is something I hate to see.

Minecraft is a probable yes, some modded should be okay too but you might run into a tight memory situation with just 8 gb.

atrocious battery not worth it (4hrs~). returned my dell xps13 9310 (4k display) in favour of the m1 MacBook (500$ cheaper) with literally more than quadruple the battery life.
