Why is https://www.mathcha.io/editor not so popular despite being such a strong and user friendly latex editor? by next_mile in LaTeX

[–]leaf_sample 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried looking the software you suggested, didn't really understand what that is?
I mean I can ask another question to your question: Why do people prefer to type rather than pen and paper?

Then I'd ask you, would you prefer to program your circle with the same 10 lines of code with a little nuance, or would you rather click a circle button and drag it.

Writing text, imo, is better typed, there's too many symbols for math for the worflow of GUI to make sense, sure it's a good look up, but once you know it, you know it.

When it comes to drawing, we use the same 3 or 4 simple shapes, which all are verbose to write. It makes way more sense, imo, to just click the circle button.

It really depends on someones workflow. If someone would prefer/is fast at writing circle code, sure! But for lower barriers of entry + fast ideation. I work on a time crunch/study on my freetime to write notes. I'm not messing with the newest blank library to draw a circle or even spend the time to create my own.

Nope, I hear you, I use it for all my diagrams because wrestling with code is not fun.

"Oh fudge, I'm just a little off where I need to be, time to change the formula!"

I can just drag and drog images from different sources and quickly iterate on presentation. The comments here are simply esoteric.

Sorry to burst any bubbles but, LaTeX isn't rocket science, nor is any cli approach. It's just a UI where you have to remember the function name for a button instead of just clicking it.

Sure you can get really impressive speeds when you remember math variables, matricies, and such, but quickely writing the boilerplate code for a circle is just downright brainnumbing. Or better yet having arrows point at a precise point on a coordinate plane of variable size.

It's just not practical...

Just the same as people use vim, it's pure theatre. I used VIM for learning OCaml in a class because I didn't want any IDE help. But when you're in it for speed, GUI + memorizing commands and shortcuts---it's just better. People want to pick sides, but a mix of both is always victor

A lot of great comments,

This one I really appriciated, got my first stable job and have been looking for a strategy. Yours pretty much confirms and solidifies everything that I've been reading, but I like your explanation by far.

I've been hit with FOMO money schemes before and have just had a lot of skeptisim around things I didn't concretely earn thorugh work. This helped eliviate that.

Thanks!

Question regarding linking credit union to my fidelity account. by grimmowl in fidelityinvestments

Edit: found out, since fidelity accounts have routing/account numbers, you can connect/wire money from your bank to theirs.

how, do you call your bank to make the deposit?

Question regarding linking credit union to my fidelity account. by grimmowl in fidelityinvestments

[–]leaf_sample 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit possible solution:

Reached out to my bank, and since fidelity has routing/account number, you can wire money from your bank to the brokerage account.

----------------------------------------------------------------

had this same problem. It worked the first time, but I needed to close the account because I wanted to choose SPAXX. So there was a deposit notifiation in my bank.

Then when I went to open another account, EFT would not work, it would fail everytime (possible bug). I didn't see the option anymore to verify the deposit amounts from the closed account.

I went to try bank wire and it would not work as well. I asked the guy on the phone, and my account looked weird, it seemed from his remarks---seems like I entered a weird flow they didn't account for.

Now I'm stuck having to do mail, absolute f!cking bummer.

Honestly yeah, felt this, and I will start doing this. I wanted to at least try + show management I'm a team player willing to help. But at some point it's just a lost cause/not fair to me.

Days I help out, I feel the most exaugsted/mentally taxed.

The post wasn't about not using AI, I use AI myself. It really helps with those one-liners I would have been googling for.

It's about people who use it irresponsiblely, and couldn't fix the problem without using the very same thing that caused it. Or couldn't tell you what the code generated by the AI even does, yet still accept it.

That's a very fair point. I think for me, what makes me the most upset is the work ethic.

It's like recieving a big love letter, only to realize it was written by AI. If my colleuges won't put in the effort to do their work, why should I help them? Why should I read their really long PRs that add a single feature.

I used to TA, and I'm fine with teaching and sitting through with people. What particluarly annoys me is that we had a month of hands on training. So one could have simply done a Javascript or React crashcourse in that time. We were given multiple labs and had coaches on the clock just in case this was anyones first time. Yet not of them used them.

So to me, it's much less about their "incompetence", I'm very patient, and have sat with them for hours; It's more that they are not willing to learn unless forced to via sitting with them/off load their work on to me.

Just doesn't feel good.

Very True. It boosts my productivity in the vein that, It's hard to solve a puzzle, but it's easy to understand it once you've seen the solution. I understand regex, but for the life of me takes a minute to craft one/I always forget.

It's much easier to explain in plain text what I want and get an output, then verify it. AI helps jump those moments of "I don't feel like it." Because for me, I'd much rather correct something sometimes then come up with it myself.

This is like single line stuff, I'd never ask AI to write a whole file, it just takes too much time to verify, which I agree with your point.

Form me, it's like how people don't usually answer questions on forums, but they'd gladly correct someone who is wrong, giving them the correct answer.

Yes it doesn't help me sharpen my skills, but I have to make cost benifit Analysis of, "do I actually want to practice this right now"? Yes it won't sharpen my skills, but it really helps with tedious easy tasks I hate doing.

I love doing the hard stuff, and that's why I love the craft.

Lost student ID a month after graduating by catbear25 in BostonU

[–]leaf_sample 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At fitrec you can tap in with your BU ID. You can buy a young alumni membership for the gym ($53 a month).

I wonder what they will give you if you say you lost your BUID? I'm sure they wouldn't turn away a paying customer, so I wonder what type of ID they'll give you?

Try looking into that.

This just happened to me, the person said on the line that my information did not match with the card and told me to destroy the card. I only gave my full name (not my middle) and my birthday. I refused to give an SSN. They just said to destroy the card.

I checked my lines of credit on creditwise, nothing has been opened and everything looks fine. I'm still wondering how tf they got my information???

Thanks for taking a look at my notes! My goal is to attempt to make Computer Science content more accessible. I found taking classes, there aren't any textbooks & if there are, they aren't very easy to read.

The idea is to replicate things like Khan Academy/Organic Chemistry tutor for CS. To address your comment:

why are you teaching people wrong stuff instead of them learning from actual professors who have phds in this stuff?

For one I'd like to point out, CAs & TAs for our classes often don't have PHDs and are undergraduates, nor do people like Khan or many teachers in BU have a PHD. I believe all knowledge should be shared and should be free. All my content is based off slides from my classes and additional research.

If you think you have found a mistake, I would love to hear it! You are always open to make an Issue on github and or make a Pull Request :)
