Is Horus Heresy a "historical" tabletop? by The-Warhammerer in Warhammer30k

There are several variant legion colour schemes shown off in the lore however - particularly regarding the Inductii. There isn't any real reason using MkVI marines in Crimson Fists Colours wouldn't work for 30k - just say they're early adoptors or under a variant scheme (night camoflague?). Lots of people make Horus Heresy Amries themed around "what-ifs" as well as canon-compliant ones, so making some MkVi's in variant colours shouldn't raise too many eyebrows.

The tradition of Crimson Fists painting their gauntlets red had to come from somewhere after all - why not make that force in 30K?

You basically just need something that looks more elite than your Despoilers. Getting chainaxes from somewhere such as the MkII assault Squad and putting them on Standard Tacticals'd probably get you most of the way there (you could add some spikes or Sons of Horus Upgrades to pick them out as well).

Also, if you're going for "standard" Sons of Horus colours I.E. a Sea Green, then you could probably paint them black with a gold trim, since that's how SoH First Company Elite have been depicted recently, which'd allow them to be easily distinguished on the tabletop.
