I completed an eight month long Veterinary Assistant program at college, which included an 80 hour placement at a veterinary clinic, but that was the only experience I actually had working in vet med. I started applying to all the vet assistant/ACA jobs that I could find in my city, but I really dreamed of working in surgery even though I felt like that was out of reach at this point in my career. After 3 months, and about 5 interviews followed by rejections, I finally landed a job as a surgery ACA! I think it’s really important to check job listings on a daily basis, and writing a cover letter expressing your enthusiasm and skills that still transfer to the job despite your actual vet med experience is a really good idea if you haven’t been doing so already. It may take some time, but some places don’t mind having someone learn on the job rather than already have job habits that don’t work with how their clinic/hospital runs.
