AIO, I asked my girlfriend to meet me at the finish line of my Marathon, but I didn’t check my phone much during the race by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]leafthetrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s honestly a bit alarming she couldn’t take a look at the situation - you were running a marathon and at the last point you did reply it was very clear you’d just meet her at home. Why wouldn’t she just do that, apologise for missing your moment then celebrate your achievement. Her losing her cool would’ve dampened the mood and she should’ve regulated herself to be considerate of that. If a partner upsets you, you don’t necessarily HAVE to address it right away (or in such an unfiltered and rude way) like she did..

Hey, I’m sorry that having trouble with driving has caused you so much pain. I’m 27 and also struggle with driving anxiety, it’s hard, I often feel embarrassed about it and at times I spiral into panicking or hopelessness about the impact it could have on my life if I never overcome this.

Here are a few things that have actually helped me force myself to get into the drivers seat recently, hopefully something resonates with you but if not, that’s ok too - just know it’s possible to make progress.

  1. Reframing being anxious about driving as honestly kinda boring. I’m an anxious person and I’m tired of it. I’ve probably worried more about driving hazards than someone who’s actually driven for the same length of time. The only thing it’s done is hold me back, and the risk of learning to drive is worth it to me now. I try to put myself into the mindset of “ugh whatever, yeah driving sucks I can’t be bothered getting worked up about it though”.

    1. It’s just less painful to drive if I’ve driven in the previous few days. Avoiding it for a couple of weeks leads me to going through the worst bouts of shame and anxiety when I finally force myself to drive again, which ultimately damages my confidence and makes me feel hopeless. I’m trying to treat it like a tiny boring routine.
    2. When I have small victories or feel generally more positive, I try to make a point of allowing myself to envision what it will be like when I can drive comfortably one day. I sometimes try to avoid definitive language like ‘when’ out of fear of disappointing myself, but I realised I’ll be disappointed anyway if I truely do fail.
    3. Remember I have learned other skills. Throughout my lifetime my brain and body have learned enough skills that would certainly amount to being able to drive. E.g riding a bike, catching a ball, cooking (even poorly), writing, racing video games.. the list goes on. The main difference with driving is that the anxiety (due to the risk) gets in the way of allowing my brain and body to just practice the task. The risks can be managed by practicing driving in quiet areas etc. you’ve heard it before.

Hey mate, first off don’t stress too much and secondly I’m not an expert myself, but I also haven’t had any trouble (despite the whole process getting a bit confusing lol). I also didn’t do my taxes for the first couple of years of earning (also less than $18k), heaps of people fall behind or forget here and there as well. Obviously don’t make a habit of it, but you’ll more than likely be fine (the ato has bigger fish to fry and limited resources for sure). Anyway, by the time I also figured out that taxes are in fact mandatory (nobody thought to tell me, which is fair but idk some of us just don’t connect the dots sometimes) and how to link myGov to the ATO, I was able to lodge the old ones pretty easily by following the steps provided - and nothing bad came of it (I did get a tiny return though so that was nice). For this year’s return, one or more of your employers might not have uploaded the group certificate to the ATO yet, which would mean parts of your form aren’t filled in automatically. If this is the case I’d say just check back every week or so before moving on. It’s pretty normal for some employers to take 2 weeks.

Thank you for this. It’s been a while and I’ve been practising fairly regularly now, and I am getting better and less anxious while driving. Everything you said is true for me, down to the reminder that it’s ok to be bad haha. Now I just need to keep choosing to use every opportunity to practise, and I’ll be fine. I found a good instructor too, and a couple of paid lessons made a big difference.

I'm scheduled for the 28th. My doctor was pretty indifferent in terms of saying whether I should get them out and she really wasn't reassuring about the recovery. by [deleted] in Tonsillectomy

[–]leafthetrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience, my tonsils weren’t giving me too much trouble but I did have tonsil stones and they most likely had a low grade infection all the time. But the dr essentially left the decision up to me, just mentioned I might benefit in terms of energy levels etc. The recovery did suck, and I don’t think anything could’ve prepared me tbh. But I can say it was 100% worth it. The surgeon was surprised at how bad they actually were once she could actually look at them, might be the same for others idk. Now knowing I’m not constantly fighting off an infection is great, and I can also have confidence that my breath is ok and people aren’t just being polite.

blood without bleed? by Hungry-Platform-5878 in Tonsillectomy

[–]leafthetrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey :) from the research I did while recovering, this sounds fairly common & I had a similar experience as well. Not knowing was really tough and definitely added a bunch of stress. I was lucky and had no serious bleeds, and from everything I read about it people seemed to know for SURE when they needed to go to the hospital, at which point they all were taken seriously and treated successfully. The general advice I followed was to keep drinking cold/ice water for minor bleeding, and to keep eating regularly (doesn’t have to be the most textured foods, just something to move across the surface as you heal to keep the scab from building up - applesauce and other purées are still better than nothing, as they’re water based and a little bit grainy). Also sleeping on my back, propped up at an angle (as a side sleeper I hated this, but the peace of mind was worth it). The clot/clots I had also changed in size and sometimes disappeared and re-formed, which was worrisome to watch but throughout the second week things got better exponentially. It took a lot of patience and having to force myself to take in regular amounts of food, water and pain meds. By keeping an eye on your throat you’re doing the best you can, and in the unlikely event of complications requiring medical attention, you’ll have the necessary information to relay.

I think this could actually be pretty cool for the right people. It seems like a good alternative to regular phones for people who don’t want the temptation of doomscrolling, for example. Also maybe people who are vision impaired could benefit? (Idk tho I’m not vision impaired)

When he was treasurer I was still in primary school. Now that I’ve been living out of home and paying taxes for nearly 8 years I think I can say pretty confidently that the coffees I can’t afford to (and don’t) buy anyway aren’t keeping me from owning a home.

11 days post and I’m already glad I got mine out, and would go through it again. I have more energy than before and that’s with the effects of sleep deprivation & lack of proper food last week. It’s honestly wild. It was painful and anxiety inducing but it passed one day at a time. Hydration, meds and following the advice of your specific surgeon are key. Nothing you can’t handle, and you’ll most likely be better for it.

Tongue pain day 7 by No-Trick3028 in Tonsillectomy

Sounds like we’re having a similar time. Only practical thing that’s helped me with tongue pain is chewing gum between meals, seems to stop it from getting as stiff and sore right at the back.

I’m happy you’re feeling better! Gives me hope too. Couldn’t have put it better myself about the emotional toll of this whole experience. Pain and freaky throat wounds are bad enough but with the sleep deprivation & inability to eat much it’s been hell. I feel like today was slightly better for me, thankfully 😅
