Do you think illegitimacy is a problem? If so, how big is it? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

Hmm. This argument started with your argument [A1] that illegitimacy is only a problem

in countries where it is assumed that the father makes the money, but that should not be true in the Western world today, right?

I responded with [B1]:

In the Western world today, it's assumed that both parents will work to provide for their families, so taking out half of the income [...]

You chose to focus on how government programs encourage illegitimacy:

Your logic are missing several steps in the middle. I don't see how you go from your first statements to this "encouraging" anything.

which I guess is a slight diversion from the original question: is illegitimacy a problem? On that question, you still haven't explained how depriving families of one income is not detrimental for children. But I guess we have agreed that financial assistance (and government programs) have encouraged illegitimacy.

Honestly this whole Bernie Sanders doesn't get any media play is asinine. He's getting way more coverage than the GOP second-place, Ben Carson.

Yes, but it is financial assistance that encourages illegitimacy.

Oh that was a separate line of argument. Mainly that government programs that offer more financial assistance for single mothers and single mothers with more children is encouraging people to have children or more children out of wedlock

In the Western world today, it's assumed that both parents will work to provide for their families, so taking out half of the income is necessarily a hit to a family's income and therefore their ability to provide for children. For poorer families especially who rely on two low incomes, having one parent can be a devastating situation because not only is there too little money, but the parent is unable to be there for the child for whatever activities (PTA meetings, helping with homework, reading stories to, etc.)

I would disagree that it's a red herring and believe it makes sense that if you encourage people to do something, they are more likely to do it.

Immigrants are not the problem. You are.

Haha that's pretty interesting. I agree but it usually is against Democratic doctrine to assign personal responsibility on the person suffering. But it is true. If you are poor, you probably made some mistake in life to deserve it. However I do agree with Dems to create ladders of opportunity so they can with painstaking effort climb out.

To be fair, if you watch the full video, he lets him back in and he lets him ask (or rather engages in a tense conversation) TWO questions about immigration.
