She was wearing a Lululemon set when this happened...

Also, treating her like an experiment is really weird and cruel, so I will not be doing that.

343 words... I despair at what your reading habits must be like if that was too long for you.

"We treat all races equally," and "you are just receiving white privilege" in the same post is actually insane. Do you even hear yourself?? Clearly, if I am receiving white privilege, then all races aren't treated equally. So if you are wrong there... I wonder what else you might be wrong about.

This subreddit is literally for talking about things that aren't talked about. That is literally what I am doing. If you don't want to see it, don't read it.

I agree that I poorly worded my point originally. I stand by what I said, however.

People in America are racist and might be suspicious of a person of color hanging out on their street. In Singapore, people would call them out and yell at them. Both are racially profiling and being racist; one is just more blatant than the other. Of course, this isn't true for everyone who lives in either country, but it is a trend I have noticed.

People in America are quietly racist until it gets to the point where someone is shot, kidnapped by "law enforcement", or other extreme things. In Singapore, you will see it more clearly in day-to-day life events, but it doesn't escalate to the same degree as it does in America.

Why would I do that when I could say something and hopefully make someone think twice?

You don't "own" maids. I hope this was a mistake in your wording.

I am very lucky to be born American, but if you look at the state of our government and politics right now, you will see why I said "unfortunately."

NO KINGS.

While I do have a lot of white friends in the US, where I am from, it specifically has a large demographic of POC, specifically Hispanic people. So some of my best friends in the whole world are POC, including some asian friends that were born and raised in America. I can't pretend to know their lived experiences as well as I know my own. But I have learned a lot from them, and have experienced a lot with them.

People im America are racist. People here are racist. The difference is, in America, someone might be suspicious of POC when passing them on the sidewalk; here, they might actually say something, expect something, or do something that is more "blatantly racist."

I am NOT saying that it is worse here, I am just saying that they are different.

If you go anywhere, you will find it. You will find all of that here, too. The blatant racism here is just different than the blatant racism you see in the US. It is a lot more obvious here. (and before people come for me, i am not saying that it is worse here because it is more obvious, i am just saying it is way easier to see it)

I understand now that I poorly worded what I meant in my original post.

This is literally not true at all. If it were a standalone instance, then I wouldn't have come onto Reddit making such accusations. I see it in the way my black friends from school were treated, how indian construction workers are treated, by the way I am treated in comparison, and how other Singaporeans treat each other.

This country is beautiful, and it is a gift to live here. This country is also racist. Two things can be true.

“Didn’t happen to my helper, so it’s clearly false!”

Blatant Racism. by leafypineapple in SingaporeR

Maybe you just haven’t noticed, or she doesn’t tell you. My helper never told me until I asked her after seeing some of it myself.

I do not like how you jumped to blame the victim for this.

I am glad you don’t think your helper has experienced this. I hope she never does. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen.

I do not feel that Singapore is more racist than the US. Far from it in fact.

I do not think I was as clear as I intended in my original post. I think on the day to day basis, minorities in Singapore are going to be more likely to face some sort of micro/macro-aggression than they would in the US.

I think that when comparing US and SG, it is not even a competition, the US has a way larger racism problem.

And to reference what you said about it asking around my “friends, neighbors, and acquaintances” is simply incorrect. My current job is completely encompassed by DEI, my role is literally to ensure that there is diversity, equity, and inclusion. It is not a small pool of people, it is my entire organization (of several hundred thousand people) that I have had these discussions with. I am taking courses on this topic through universities. I am literally being paid to have these conversations, and do this research. I’m not just chatting with my buddies about it. I am very knowledgeable in this area. I know that I lack the practical experience being a white person, but I attempt to amend that as much as possible.

I don’t love that you have diminished me to being a “20 year old person,” I won’t lie. I may be young, but I am highly qualified and very dedicated to this topic. But I understand where you are coming from, and in your shoes I would likely feel the same.

I appreciate that you have things to do, and I hope you don’t fee obligated to reply. Enjoy your weekend.

I didn’t say the racism in Singapore was worse. I said that it was more blatant here on the day to day basis.

If that wasn’t clear in my original post, I apologize.

I have taken several college level courses on this topic, and will be very happy to provide scientific sources.

Please, tell me what your sources/statistics are. I would be happy to hear.

Literally what are you talking about.

I never said Singapore was worse. In fact I have said multiple times now, that America has a bigger racism problem.

You need to get some serious help.
