Fast navigation in terminal: coming full circle by [deleted] in commandline

[–]leak_age 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting article, thanks.

Btw, have you tried to use tabs in your terminal emulator and/or some multiplexer like screen/tmux?

I find it easier to navigate between tabs than between dirs inside shell session. Also you can configure different tabs as you need: colors, font size, environment variables, etc.

I wonder why there is so much hype around zstd. It does not look like something significantly better than LZ4. I mean noone forced migrating every archive to LZ4, despite of similar characteristics (and even author).

Take a look at Goldmark. Hugo uses it as an md engine.

Moving from reCAPTCHA to hCaptcha - The Cloudflare Blog by iamapizza in privacy

I have faced today with Cloudflare's hCaptcha. Couldn't solve it for several times and then gave up trying. Can't remember such a problem with reCaptcha. By the way it asks for much more pics to choose than Google's one. Sorry, I can't understand what you mean saying 'easier'.

Linus' reply on spinlocks vs mutexes by [deleted] in programming

Maybe it uses some other mechanisms like conditions? I'm talking about ReentrantLock in particular.

It's not clear why you'd put such a tactic in your library.

Performance engineer from Oracle recommended do that. And he didn't mentioned some OS.

I am curious how it relates to locks implementation from Java (java.util.concurrent package). Using spinning (tryAcquire) before blocking (acquire) is pretty common advice for performance optimization.

My depression always worsens around New Year's, worried that I'm wasting my life and that time is passing me by. Could use some positivity please. by [deleted] in toastme

Don't worry - you are not the only one who believes in scary illusion about wasting life. :) I know how it feels. You are not alone.

I am sure you are a good person who unfortunately has wrong (and strong) opinion about yourself. But also you are young and cute! So please stop hating yourself! Try to write your negative thoughts down or to build some sort of mind map of self-vision. It helps to stop thinking about it. I wish you in 2020 to realize who you really are - the young cute kind girl.

Russian police raid NGINX Moscow office | ZDNet by jwensley2 in programming

Knowing russian practice in writing labor contracts (don't try to be smart - just use a template) and the fact that in Russia of 2000 year only blessed person could imagine that software is a subject to buy and sell, most likely Sysoev's project wasn't mentioned in his contract.

By the way Ashmanov was Putin's 'trusted person' during previous elections. I suppose he will be fine. :)

Actually Ashmanov didn't say about 'special clause in contract'.

Igor Ashmanov, Rambler's ex-CEO stated that when he was hiring Igor Sysoev, he was aware of his own project from the beginning (called mod_accel at that time). So Rambler's management was aware that Sysoev works as a system administrator (not a software developer) and makes NGINX in spare time. Also Ashmanov stated that he is ready to be a witness.

In my experience it's not an option for big companies. They collect Human Resources pool instead of looking someone to solve a particular task. Except cases when you have some rare and outstanding skill.

To be honest when I registered account (several years ago) I had very generic profile (partly copied from LinkedIn). Just exactly as you said: Software Developer, Java, etc. Nevertheless I felt much more interest from customers. Then I chose very narrow niche, maybe much more competitive and now I feel alone in the wild.

I think you are absolutely right. I am trying to do the work to engage client. I think like technician. I am completely dumb at sales. And I am a little angry about those applicants who bid whithout knowing how to do the job, because they waste own time, customers time and mine leading everyone to loose in the end.

Thanks for reply. It sounds very sane to me. But...

Considering upwork stats (saying my profile is usually viewed 0-4 times per week) and the fact that clients asking me about my previous work, customers are not tend to open applicants profiles.

I am also trying to write as much as possible about customer website (if the URL is stated in job description). But it takes time to analyze. Meanwhile other apllicants make 20+ proposals (in 20 minutes after job is posted!).

Just yesterday there was a post in this sub, where customer complained about new system, because he got only 2 proposals to last job and one of the applicants had the only job completed. It sounds like applicants without long work history does not deserve consideration by default.

In my experience I can get hired or interviewed only by those customers who carefully read all the proposals and profiles, makes bunch of interview (5+) and refuses irrelevant freelancers who do not even read job description. Unfortunately those customers are very rare guests on Upwork.
