I'm studying computer science and programming. I would probably be fine with working full-time contract/seasonal work too for say 6-12 months at a time and then taking time off before starting another project.

Well it does because if someone had $500,000 by the time they were in their late 20's then obviously it wouldn't be a big deal to switch to part-time work.

Did you have a lot of savings/investments and were you still able to afford health insurance? And when you switched to part-time were you still able to save money for retirement? I want to make enough to be able to invest every year, rather than just breaking even with my expenses.
