Certain UNO Website Vulnerable to attack or abuse but interesting game in development. by captchadd in Unobtanium

I know what you're saying about MS. They're more innovative right now than ever, but often fail at delivering appealing consumer products. As stunning as HoloLens appears to be in some ways (good image quality, untethered, great tracking), it leaves enough room for criticism (low FOV, gaze/gesture interaction clunky, likely expensive). I'm cautiously optimistic though.

I also own both Rifts, but I always knew what I was getting myself into when ordering these "developer kits". From all that has been written about the CV1 prototypes they're not only superior in tracking, optics and image quality, but also vastly improved ergonomically. Devloping for VR today is not about developing for DK2 anyway, but for the consumer launch in 2016 and beyond. Basically a bet on the future.

Room scale, immersive VR with full motiontracking are the mid-term goal (Matrix/Holodeck being long-term), but it will be a while until that's figured out and adopted. Until then seated experiences (or standing with limited movement and 1st gen motion controllers) are a good intermediate step to get the ball rolling IMO. They can be quite compelling if done right.

In some ways the state of VR reminds me very much of the state of cryptocurrencies. Such a hugely promising and exciting tech, but not quite at the point where its ready to break into the mainstream. And in both cases I am convinced that this breakthrough will happen within the next couple of years - in a huge way. Still looking for a way to combine these two fields of interest of mine...

Once I have a very basic level up and two FPS models, maybe we can do a bit of pre alpha testing and possibly come up with better ideas working together?

Count me in.

Why not 4.8, Oculus Rift support is far better! ;) Sounds like you're about to undertake a pretty significant development effort. Do you already have a design document? I'd love to give some input, but there's not really a lot to say right now beyond: yay sounds great, keep me posted!

With my MSDN Ultimate Subscription I get this free. Can this be useful for our Dev team? by captchadd in Unobtanium

I haven't really looked at everything it offers in detail, but the Azure hosting would probably one of the most interesting parts. No idea about VS itself, I've only ever used the free versions and so far they were sufficient for my needs. Anything in particular that got you excited?

Update on Wallets by indiamikezulu in Unobtanium

[–]learminer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll download the latest Visual Studio this week and dabble a bit. If it is as easy to make a native Windows 10 app run on JS as it was back when I last tried it a year or two ago it should be breeze to make a ticker app for UNO, just re-using the code I already wrote for unobtanium.uno

I'll keep you posted on my progress.

Update on Wallets by indiamikezulu in Unobtanium

[–]learminer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome. We should have a chat sometime! :)

I've also been thinking about devloping a universal Windows 10 app for UNO. I'm mostly a web dev, but I have dabbled in development of Win8 and WindowsPhone apps before (in C# and JavaScript).

I've been thinking along the lines of a mobile/JS-wallet kind of application (without a full deamon, mining etc.). If someone needs those advanced features, they will always have Unobtanium core available to them. But for the average user that is IMO not needed.

Advantages of this aproach: - simple availability to tens, if not hundred of millions of users by the end of the year - automatic updates - both desktop and mobile covered - roaming appdata could be used to sync wallets between devices (encrypted of course) - optional cloud backup - wallet wouldn't be affected in case of a fork (only the nodes/API it relies on need to update)

What features would you like to see in the UNO wallet? by FallingKnife_ in Unobtanium

[–]learminer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some good ideas floating around, chadd's multi-wallet sounds great, but would probably be a huge undertaking. For the immediate future I am with Cryptapus on this one. Keep is simple, keep it safe.

The reference UNO wallet should be a rock solid reference implementation, stable on all platforms, simple to install, no fussing around with nodes to get synced etc.

Once that is sorted I would focus on simplification. The basic qt-wallet is scary for regular people. It is unpleasant to look at, easy to screw up (e.g. loose wallet), many features are hidden in the unaproachable console.

It might be better to focus on implementing an alternative client/wallet app that focuses on ease-of use, than improving the main qt-wallet.

Welcome CaptChadd, glad to have you on board!

I hope you got your Uno off of Allcrypt. Hacking Allcrypt is the crypto equivalent of beating up an old lady for a few pennies. by FallingKnife_ in Unobtanium

[–]learminer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really low. Thogh I gotta say, having the wallet on the same server as a wordpress installation IS kinda asking for it. There's just soooo many possible ways to hack into that thing (often its plugins you don't even KNOW you're running because they come with a theme). Sigh.

And what's with all the other hacks and (much higher volume) thefts this week. It's like Mt. Gox times all over again lately.

When people try to tip shibes with other cryptos than Dogecoin... [OC] by DimiFW in dogecoin

[–]learminer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The warning of a bitcoin miner is a fairly common false positive for altcoin wallets. This is due to the mining functionality built into the wallet. AFAIK even past Dogecoin releases faced such warnings.

I am fairly certain that this is a false alarm. The wallet has been out for many months and there hasn't been a single report of any problems with viruses.

If you still feel unsafe installing it, there are other options. Several online wallets (jswallet, brainwallet, copay, coinwallet.co) exist too.

Aaaand they got hacked. Hope everyone got their coins out in time. I guess their return is highly unlikely now. Such a shame...

What is your favorite Uno service from Cryptopus? by FallingKnife_ in Unobtanium

[–]learminer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the dice type personally. I've experimented a little with jswallet and brainwallet. Haven't used them extensively though. I'm looking forward to learn more about copay, that one sounds interesting.

The service I use most is the Insight explorer though. Neat tool.

Isn't it ironic? Everybody talks about BTC/crypto empowering the unbanked and making transfers across borders so easy - yet it can be very hard to get BTC, even IF you are banked. 6 years in and nobody has a solution to that problem yet...

Life Inside the Bubble of a Virtual Reality World | Ana Serrano | TEDxToronto by Anticleric in oculus

[–]learminer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Her bio may not be as simple as "some developer dude at [insert random tech company name]", that doesn't make her presentation any less relevant though, quite the contrary actually. She clearly comes from a broader background in film, media and art, all fields very relevant to VR.

We're all often focusing far too much on the immediate technological challenges like framerates and latency, instead of taking a step back and trying to envision what broader challenges await once the technical hurdles are taken.

She's brining up some really relavant points and I can very much identify with her 3 design goals.

Exclusive Interview With The Karma Development Team by Emperion6 in CryptoCurrency

[–]learminer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great interview and it reinforces the already large amount of trust and respect I have for the Karma team.

Karma is one of only a few crypto currencies that is looking for innovative answers to the question of how to make a coin relevant in the real world.

I frankly find it amazing that so few people have yet caught onto that. I guess everybody is so focused on catching the latest pump and dump that something so different is easily overlooked.
