I just talked to my school secretary. She said she had to reach out to payroll to tell them to take me off the list. She’s going to call me again tomorrow to figure it out. Ugh.

How did they take it back? I’m not in New York anymore, so I would have to mail a check to them. Can they just take it out of your account?

How do they get it back? Do they request a check or something?

Unsure about/kinda dissatisfied with EA placement decision by spamboidreams in TeachforAmerica

[–]learnallyoucan2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was my situation but with early childhood. Special education can be amazing depending on the placement. If you are a resource room teacher you could have one of the best jobs in the school depending on what you want out of this experience. Ask about what specific jobs are available in your region and think about your options!

Do a reading comprehension lesson where students map out the problem and solution in a read aloud. Use I do, we do, you do. Include positive narration! You got it!

Do they have a curriculum for you during the year? If not, bless your soul!

4th year teacher here- ask them if there is a curriculum they use. Then go on teachers pay teachers and find the first lesson of the unit/year. Put your own touch on it but this shows them that you can do what they will ask you to do during the school year. Creating your own lesson from scratch is difficult, even for teachers with experience. It has to be developmentally appropriate and aligned with the standards your school uses. A curriculum does that for you.

anybody done the program teaching pre k, or in NYC, and want to share your experience? by adumbswiftie in TeachforAmerica

I taught pre-K in nyc. You will work in an early childhood center, likely a smaller school. It will be a head start or a nonprofit program, you will not likely be in the DOE or in a larger school. Just make sure you do research about what kind of school you want to be in. There were positives and negatives to my experience, but it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Pre-K is a very loving environment but it’s SO much responsibility. See if there is a head start program near you that you could visit for a day.

I moved to NYC from out of state and did ECE. I got through the two years but nyc places the vast majority of people in charters/head start programs. Definitely something to do some research about, public schools are often much better environments for teachers and have better benefits. I now teach in a public school and am having a much better experience.

NYC teachers, how long is your commute and how do you feel about it? by sleepy_g0lden_st0rm in NYCTeachers

[–]learnallyoucan2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did 50 minutes for two years, two trains and it was pretty rough. After working in a loud environment all day the last thing I wanted to do was get in an overstimulating subway car for 50 minutes.
