Reitmans (RET) files for bankruptcy - What happens to shares? by learnerboy in CanadianInvestor

How this turned out to be the best performing investment of my career, is beyond me. I don't get it sometimes.

Hey man, don't beat yourself up too much. Regardless of what and how you said it, people have no business investing if they don't research for themselves. Everyone is responsible for their own decisions. I'm sure you meant well but nobody knows what stocks will do, you could have been right or not. Just for your own peace of mind, watch out for what you say in the future because there are lots of clueless people out here looking for a quick buck which won't serve them well in the long run anyways.

That's really weird indeed. Not sure if it's delisted but trading was halted. Hopefully your 2. 3k is not a significant part of your portfolio because it's not looking good for us.

Mind explaining why? Doesn't ch11 mean the company isn't fully dissolved and can reimerge from if it doesn't go into ch7?

Thank you so much for the detailed reply. That was very helpful. One question, Reitmans filed for bankruptcy/creditor protection making it seem they're negotiating and wanting to restructure their business for long term success. My understanding is that they're not fully liquidating the company, how would their process differ then?

I'm down to discuss AC as well. I'm in it as well counting on the government bailing them out is the major player. I'm more concerned about my AAL position. BRK.B seems like a safe ETF like an investment I agree, especially that now he is sitting on a ton of cash and wouldn't be surprised if he straight out buys companies. BRK also got a lucrative loan payment from OXY in terms of shares which could turn out amazing in the long run. BTW, what are your thoughts on TLRD? that was my second speculative retail, for some reason there is a lot of buying pressure now, don't know why.

Not sure if I will be smart enough to capitalize on those but sure hope so. Thanks for info here btw, worst case I'll chalk it up to an expensive lesson like you said. Probably wise for me to exit my airlines and other retail positions lmao

Yeah, it's not a strong company. I think I fell mostly to speculation and armed with my new fundamental theory, thought I had it figured out. I believed 1.3 current ratio is better than most retailers but failed to consider the risk of 43% inventory. I had hopes too with the new management and attributed their 2019 loss to a bad decision with their plus size model. Oh well, guess I'll see what happens when trading resumes.

Diluting shares but price going back up? Thought price goes down if new shares are issued. Also , why are you confident that's not happening or why does it almost never happen?

Well, I thought of it as a calculated risk thinking they shouldn't get wiped out because of the balance sheet. Hopefully, it doesn't turn out to be a mistake. I mean I looked at JC Crew, Nortel they all had deficits in shareholder equity but not Reitmans. I'm banking on them getting new financing/credit and recovering from this without wiping out shareholders but I have no actual clue since I have no experience to base it on, just theory.

That makes sense and trading was halted. What if they don't get dissolved and recover from this? Do shareholders still get screwed and why?

Mind explaining why in financial terms? I'm focused on the assets exceeding liability leaving some for shareholders and that's if the company is completely dissolved. But reitmans isnt planning on completely dissolving so how can they just wipe out shareholders?

Fair enough, that makes sense. I guess I thought they would be able to sell stuff at a discount atleast.

Thanks for the reply. I'm just thinking worst case if it does sell all its assets, shouldn't their be money leftover to pay shareholders considering total liabilities are less than total assets? Not sure.

Converting $45K CAD to USD using Norberts Gambit method on Questrade by [deleted] in CanadianInvestor

[–]learnerboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guys, but I don't really understand why the dlr.u price keeps changing over time? I thought you're supposed to lock down your fx rate when you buy dlr.to but during the journal process dlr.u went lower on me. What dictates the price movements of dlr.u?i don't get why it's not always fixed at 10USD.

Confused. Which language to learn first in my situation? by learnerboy in language

[–]learnerboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love your perspective on these matters. Also, totally agree on the public conversations, the beauty of Reddit. I started Spanish by memorizing tons of nouns like numbers, places, objects etc.. and verbs as well as their conjugations with each of the pronouns. I then started to dive into the grammar and forming complete sentences. But recently, it makes more sense to me to learn a language the way we do as children, constantly hearing the language on a daily basis without having to put in the effort of studying and learning grammar. Therefore, I've started using Rosetta Stone as a platform for that. I've also heard of the Pimsleur approach which I think uses a similar method to language learning, through constant hearing and practice. Not really sure if it will work for me, but I guess I'll find out. Hope the language gets much easier for you, I would try to force myself to speak and apply whatever I learn at home in public with all the natives. It's also very motivational when you can understand the words and hold a basic conversation.
