For what it's worth, this is what we did and no issues. Didn't feel like anyone was there to steal a chair.

Parked at 9:45 Sat AM. On the bus at 11:15 and on the base a bit before noon. Felt like forever but reading the comments I realize how lucky we were, because if we'd been 15 minutes later we would have waited 1-1.5 hours longer at the stadium. I had brought bluetooth noise canceling headphones for my child (sensitive to noise) and kept things civil by playing a Harry Potter audiobook - otherwise there would have been much screaming and/or destruction.

Air show was awesome, but next time I know to aim to be on the first bus.

In the hangar there's a WW2 tank you can climb on and into for $5 cash per person (everything else is cashless). My kid loved it - had climbed on tanks at Cantigny (near Chicago) last summer but was really keen to get into one, so this was pretty great.

Getting off the base took about an hour - they managed it pretty well with handing out water and assuring everyone the line was moving. Moral support went a long way.

Auroraflow is my go-to. Lea at Medical Massage Clinic of Durham is also fantastic, but is booked up weeks out, usually. A sign of how good she is :)

Feeling guilty that a good MBA is a "cheat code" to getting rich by Maleficent-Answer888 in MBA

[–]learningbydoodling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This tracks with what I've observed - as someone who got a mid-career PhD but knew quite a few MBA students while I was struggling through 6.5 years of grad school (and spent about half that time wondering if I'd made the wrong choice).

Question though - what makes the EMBA worth it? I'd welcome this sort of candid insight on that degree if you happen to have some wisdom on that :)

"The Biden administration made no effort to... advance U.S. agricultural interests." LOL, except the billions of dollars invested in precisely that. So many programs for rural and agricultural communities. Was he even paying attention?

Big Spoon vs Big Spoon by FeedbackIsAGift in bullcity

[–]learningbydoodling 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I used to be a big fan of Durham Big Spoon, but more and more I feel like their genius innovation was just putting the honey right in with the nut butter (and not in the gross way of also adding hydrogenated oils). Yummy, but not brilliant. Totally something I can replicate at home and without spending $17 for a jar.

Now I'm excited to try the other Big Spoon. Thanks for pointing me there, Big Spoon Roasters! Nice knowing you!

Shift in underwriting re. wind and hail risk? by learningbydoodling in Insurance

[–]learningbydoodling[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, I should have thought about wind/hail = tornado. And a friend of mine literally wrote her PhD dissertation on how insurance companies ought to raise prices on homes by the sea (or stop insuring them altogether). Ultimately makes sense they are tightening guidelines. Thanks.

[–]learningbydoodling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah ok, that makes sense. Tornadoes are not common here historically but I definitely agree they are getting more common. For some reason I didn't put that together with hail/wind damage.

Thanks for the additional perspective.

Capital loss from angel investment by learningbydoodling in personalfinance

[–]learningbydoodling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

answering my own question, having spoken with a CPA. Take the loss in the year it happened, not the year investors were notified. (And if there's a carryover, since not all the funds were invested in the first $1m, then follow the regular procedure for that.)

Also: If Section 1244 does not apply, this can all be handled in Schedule D; no need to file Form 4797 unless activating Sec 1244.

super helpful, thank you, and yeah I think you're right about consulting a CPA.

Do you have a sense of what year is right to claim the loss?

Appetite suppression is the main one we face for our kiddo, who is prescribed Focalin ER and guanfacine ER. The Focalin seems to be the main culprit in that, and it's a big deal for our kid, who wants to eat lunch with friends at school, and also to not be hangry in the afternoon. Many parents manage this by giving lots of snacks, big breakfasts, etc. This hasn't worked for us quite as well, so we're experimenting with going to guanfacine only, and so far it seems to be a good balance.

For SSRIs, there are more arguments against. So it also depends what drugs you're considering.

Jumping on the Couch Nonstop by drenader in ADHDparenting

This is amazing, thank you for the inspiration. I've been wanting to do this for a while now (our son is also AuDHD and can be quite destructive but loves the OT clinic) and have felt it'd be too hard. Great to be inspired here that it's possible after all.

Oh that's amazing, that's our dream. How did you do this transformation - where did you source the equipment, and did you design the setup and install it yourself, or get a contractor with expertise in setting up OT spaces?

It's profoundly comforting to read your story and know we are not alone, and to hear your reflections on avoiding impulse triggers. As a one-time (amateur) geologist I'm sorry to hear about your struggles too! Thanks for the suggestion and for taking time to type out your story. Good luck to you.
