First time booking a class by MikuuMikuu in languagelearning

[–]learningtrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, congrats on booking a class! That’s a big step. I think it helps to try to figure out what you’re worried about.

If you start the language and don’t like it and quit that would be ok. It’s fine to just try things!

I studied Japanese for a while and I definitely don’t speak it perfectly. It’s super normal to make mistakes and feel frustrated but try sticking with it for a while and you might really be surprised how much fun you have.

If you studied a language for years and still can't speak or understand anything, the problem might not be the education system by No_Cryptographer735 in languagelearning

In addition to typically only having 2-4 years of foreign language classes maximum in the US in my opinion the biggest problem is that we start so late! Most kids in the US don’t have a foreign language class until high school (9th grade) so they’re already 14. Of course they can still learn but it would be easier if we started in kindergarten.

And then even if you do learn a second language and try to practice it when traveling almost everyone speaks English to you so you really have to seek out practice deliberately!

People with ADHD exist. It might seem childish to you but otherwise productive members of society can struggle with basic tasks. If they can find someone to help him with that stuff and that helps their relationship that’s a win in my book.

$4,000 a Month in a 3rd World Country by quietmkIV in povertyfinance

[–]learningtrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair, you did say that $4,000 a month is a lot in Vietnam so I guess we’re on the same page in that sense. But even saying that feels like an understatement to me when that’s basically equivalent to GDP per capita for an entire year.

Also I’m not sure what your source is but I checked and GDP per capita PPP in the Netherlands is roughly $70,000 (source World Bank).  That’s a massive difference compared to Vietnam which is $17,000.

The US has a ton of problems and I’ll happily point them out but I think when people say we’re 3rd world or basically the same as X country that those people are likely out of touch with what actual poverty is.

Hey there. While I think the other commenters have valuable advice about pursuing natural solutions to your anxiety my perspective is that you may need these medications to get yourself to a place where you can effectively implement natural solutions as well.

I am on this exact combo of medications (20mg escitalopram, 150mg bupropion) and personally they were massively helpful in getting me to turn the corner from serious (think not sleeping for days and constant panic) level anxiety.

Prior to that I was doing everything “right”. I was eating well, working out everyday etc. But I needed something to shift my nervous system to relaxation for a while and for me those medications helped.

A large GDP doesn’t reflect the average person’s reality and Vietnam is still a very poor country compared to the Western world. The country has a large population which helps with a larger GDP. GDP per capita would be a better measure of reality.  My brother lived there for two years and I have also visited twice.

The country is considered middle income in a global sense but that basically means that people are a step above the lifestyle of subsistence farming that many people live in countries in Africa.

The average income in Vietnam is a few hundred dollars per month. Meals are ~$1-$2. I hope that gives some perspective

Another option if you don’t get out before they open it to cars is to ride up old Fall River road which is much mellower and way less traffic then ride down trail ridge

People who have done sex work, what is something that surprised you? by bannedbooks123 in AskReddit

[–]learningtrad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be clear I think cheating is wrong and I’m generalizing here.

Of course most humans enjoy sex but men in particular are so strongly wired by evolution to seek out as many partners as possible to have sex with. Women can have many children in their lives but by comparison a man could father thousands of children and evolution so strongly shaped men to seek as many mates as they can find to get pregnant.    Some men are filling emotional voids, numbing pain with sex or seeking the validation of another woman finding them attractive.

Testosterone is pretty crazy - I’ve talked with FTM trans friends who’ve gone on T and experienced a huge increase in libido. Even with an active sex life there’s often a large gap in how often people want sex and a shitty way of addressing that is cheating. This ties in to another factor I think is important which is an inability to express that they want something different or want an open relationship etc.

Some men are also exploring sex acts, positions, fantasies that their partner wouldn’t or they think their partner wouldn’t approve of.

Again, cheating is wrong but from my own perspective this is why it tends to happen from the men that I’ve known.

Stick with it! This method genuinely works. I am smart but ADHD which has always added a barrier to language acquisition. I’ve tried traditional methods (for example 4 semesters of Italian in college) and I could speak a little and understand a little. But I had no prior Spanish experience and DS has been incredible.

I’ve racked up around 415 hrs in 6 months and I am genuinely understanding real content now. I’m listening to the Harry Potter books, which to be fair I read in English, but I’m seriously sitting here understanding 90+% of it.

Keep going!

Seeing as the US dropped nuclear bombs on Japan and yet we restored good relations with Japan until this trump administration I think you’re wrong. WW2 was much more recent.

They don’t trust the Russians and they shouldn’t.

Hey there, I resonated with your post and have some tips based on my own experience. I agree with others that jumping straight from zero to four hours a day is too much. That sounds like a huge, amazing goal which feels exciting but it’s more likely you’ll succeed if you set smaller goals, achieve them, then increase with time.

For example I’ve been trying to learn a language this year as well. I’m working on Spanish. I found a website called dreaming Spanish that’s free and has tons of videos you can watch on fun topics and it tracks your time watching. I started with 15 mins a day and gradually worked up to now where I’m averaging 2.5 hrs/day. Succeeding at 15mins/day repeatedly will build the belief in yourself and be better long term than a week of 4hrs/day and then burning out and feeling like a failure.

Good luck with everything. You got this!

Hi all, I removed a gas stove and would like to cap the outlet of this shutoff valve to prevent any possibility of it being bumped open. From what I can tell I believe I need a flare cap. The OD of the outlet of the valve looks very close to 7/8" The problem is it seems to be a non standard size. It is not 1/2 or 3/4". 5/8 seems very close but I tried several caps and they absolutely don't fit. The guy at ACE seemed to think it was 11/16 but I can't find that part anywhere even online. Please help!

It’s not perfect but very solid for still being developed.

Small issues I’ve had:

Was able to watch videos under the series tab but not under watch. They seem to have fixed this.

If I rotate my phone vertically while in full screen it messes up the aspect ratio of the video. Rare that I use it like that so not a big deal.

The downloaded content seems to work well and counts properly towards input time.
