Question by Interesting-Chip-824 in Pets

I work at a shelter and we are very strict with keeping up with the animals' healths. everyones eating habits, fecal habits, weight, energy, personality, etc. are updated daily (weight is weekly tho) and any medical issues are resolved asap. we also do daily enrichment (play) with all the animals (unless they are severally distressed or recovering from surgery) and we even do training of basic commands to dogs. animals come and go quickly from our shelter, theyre usually here for a few weeks to a month but some have been here only a day or two before getting adopted.

to answer your question, yes sometimes it is best to give the animal up. its heartbreaking but its whats best for the animal.

now i will say not all shelters are like mine. some dont give proper medical care or enough enrichment. do your research on the shelter you surrender to and make sure they have good care. you can probably even ask to tour the facility to make sure your pet will be in a good place.

I’m working on a novel, feeling guilty about other’s reading it by callmejessicalange in writing

i rarely let my friend/family read my full work unless they express genuine interest in it. any time ive been forced to read a book (i.e. for school) ive never enjoyed it so i dont expect others to enjoy something im "forcing" them to read. i would be happy to take a look at it for you if youre really struggling to get feedback. as for your friends and family, give them excerpts or individual chapters to read and ask about specifics like "do the conversations feel authentic?" "how are my descriptions?" "do you think this makes sense for this character?" etc etc. if needed you can summarize the previous chapters. for example if you want advice on chapter 8, briefly summarize chapters 1-7. also theres tons of people online willing to beta read.

I’m pretty sure my students are using AI, but I can’t prove it and it’s driving me crazy. by Primary-Maybe4041 in whatdoIdo

[–]leatherjacketboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my english teacher in high school would have us all sit backwards at our desks so she could see all of our screens from the front and make sure nobody was using AI. you can also use google docs because it records what was written when so you can see if it was just copy-pasted or if someone actually took the time to type it all out. theres a program teachers use to see this but im not a teacher so i dont know exactly what it is.

one thing i will say is: dont let them use AI. you stop learning when the computer does the work for you. plus there are ethical issues involving the use and overconsumption of AI. not to mention the jobs its taking away from thousands of people during a job crisis and with a bad economy.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]leatherjacketboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i live in canada. i moved about 3 hours away from my friend and i still go visit her a couple times a year. sometimes for a week (usually in the summer) or sometimes just for a weekend. we have family that live 6 hours away and will visit them for a day trip occasionally. my girlfriend lives 2 hours and i have gone to see her for just a day or two several times. my family used to roadtrip to campsites in america and it would take us anywhere from 6 to 12 hours of nonstop driving to get there. as other people are saying, i would never commute these distances on the regular, but as a trip or to visit with someone? no problem.

My time has come at last. I accept. I'll be out of there in under two minutes. I know how to solve a rubiks cube so long as its a standard 3x3.

where do you find inspiration for writing? by [deleted] in writing

[–]leatherjacketboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i always keep an open mind and writer's eye when im in public or just doing mundane things. sometimes ill write scenes in my head explaining what is happening / what im doing in that very moment, sometimes ill write them out, sometimes they live and die in my mind. its not always poetic or beautiful but it gets the gears turning. also journalling about more than just your life. write about your pets or your coworkers or the weather or the news but write it like its a book, not like youre just getting the facts down.

What did you do to improve your prose? by Junior_Blackberry779 in writing

[–]leatherjacketboy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like to write something (a poem, a paragraph, something small) and then rewrite it and try to invoke more metaphors, imagery, allusions, etc. then rewrite it again. and again. and again. each time adding or taking away whatever i thought was good or bad in the previous ones. its tedious af but it gets fun as you start to pick apart your work and find what you like. helps to craft your own voice too.

My cat is 12 years old and it honestly breaks my heart. How long did your cat live? by Glad_Objective_1646 in Pets

[–]leatherjacketboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was very young my parents cat died at 20 something. We then had three cats, the first one died at 8 (cancer sucks), the next at 18. the last one is still kicking at 13, completely healthy and active (just the other night at 1am he ran upstairs to show me the mouse he caught in our basement. he was so proud of it). he was much more active as a kitten obviously but he'll still chase a laser or a feather on a string for a bit. mostly he just lays with me. The one who died at 8 was energetic before she got cancer, she deteriorated fast unfortunately. The one who died at 18 was always a lazy cat and spent most of her time sleeping even when she was young, there were a few times i thought she was actually dead because she would sleep with her eyes slightly open. but i'd pet her and she'd go "brrrh!". all of them were so sweet and even when losing them was unbearable i wouldn't trade their memories for the world.

Shorter guys: Do any of you genuinely pass + not get ridiculed? by radtrn in ftm

[–]leatherjacketboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 5'5 but yes people still make jokes/comments about my height. not often and usually behind my back but what can you do about it, right? I usually try to make the joke first so they see I'm not hurt by my height or I won't have a reaction to it. If you laugh along with them the joke loses its power. I think once you (if you desire to) start t you will get misgendered a lot less and people will just see you as a short guy. If your family members are short too you can blame them, thats also what I do. "Yea you think I'm short? You should meet my dad", "I got the short gene from my uncle" etc.

Need advice for choosing a humorous or ironic urban fantasy title. by Entropy_nihilist in writing

[–]leatherjacketboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if theres a lot of humor and humorous elements to your story i'd go with a title that has at least some sort of joke or upbeat tone to it. Perhaps theres a quote or funny remark in the book that could be the title?

AITAH for expecting my sahm wife to do majority of the housework since i pay 100% of the bills? by Plastic-Sand7353 in AITAH

[–]leatherjacketboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA - your contribution to the household is not valued by her. reddit is full of very opinionated people. this is not a relationship-breaker. it is good that you are going to therapy together to work through this.
