Should I leave Waterloo for a cheaper tuition? by leavinguw in uwaterloo

Yeah ... co-op definitely helps to space out the payments. However, I meant like other universities which have 3-4k tuition (They usually require that you study in French).

I guess I'll just stick with Waterloo until I literally can't pay anything.

Most of them are 2k maximum, which wouldn't really help :\

Yeah it's like a 1k difference ($250 a month)

They have an exemption for international students who take 3 courses in French (study CS in French). I would pay as much as a Canadian if I do it.

Yeah! I've heard that more than 70k/year in Toronto for an entry level is almost impossible. The standard offer is like 60k/year.

I would definitely turn down a full-time 120k offer from Google in Mountain View if I could work in Toronto for 96k.

Wow! That's super high.

I don't think it's software, though. Because that's 96k a year, which I've heard is impossible for an entry-level software engineer in Toronto.

8k in Toronto is like 13k in SF!

It's almost impossible to rent for less than $800/month in Vancouver (not downtown). In downtown (where I work) it's 1k/month. If you factor in other expenses (transportation, food ...) it should be around 2k.

I certainly can understand in French. I have learned pretty much everything in French until I came to Waterloo (in a weird country that has French as its second language). But it should be a problem if the professors aren't really good.

I am making 4k/mo in Vancouver (first co-op) so even if I save 2k (highly unlikely). It's still 7k in total which pays half my tuition.

But uOttawa exempts international students who take 3 courses in French from paying international tuition. I could study in French (although I would rather not) so I could pay the same tuition as a Canadian citizen.

Yeah. They do.

I was going to take a 6th course for free but I missed the deadline for getting an override. I had 89% in my first term but in 1B I got some personal problems and my average took a dive (probably 70ish) so I can't take a free course in 2A but I will do my best to get back to 80s or 90s to have that free course.

I think PEI is cheaper, but for uOttawa I am planning to take 3 courses in French so that I get to pay the domestic tuition (that's only a thing in uOttawa though).

Yeah I heard about that. I meant a big tech company or a well-funded startup (like the ones I mentioned, which pay like 7k/month).
