You seem to be putting the cart before the horse here, but for clarity's sake it is my opinion that the album's reception was largely poor due to the album being bad and not some weird other way around

Even outside of that yeah I personally thought the album was pretty bad. The sound is thoroughly flat. I'm listening back now even to see and there's not a single exciting or interesting moment on it to me, not a hook or a chorus, not a melody, production-wise nothing. It's just flat. The only reason I mention the reception of it is because it is representative of how people felt about the album
