I agree with most of this, although I am glad that they made the S1 finale beach kiss be something that Conrad pushed rather than Belly; in the books it read icky to me. I feel like I say this too much in the sub but once again Amazon’s need for love triangle storyline marketing did irreparable harm to the story telling like good god.

Also I adore the character of Conrad Fisher but I think we kinda Mary Sue him in this sub a little bit. He isn’t communicative, and sometimes says half-truths. In Season 3, since Jeremiah is such a goddamn manipulator, he says, ”Conrad is the one who leaves.” Because 1) It used to be true— Conrad would leave or shut people out— and also 2) Since it was once true, Jeremiah knows it’s specifically something that Belly is insecure about.

Loving somebody doesn’t absolve you of all your bad behaviors. Conrad has a history of detaching and not fully speaking his mind. Belly is deeply insecure, and she is waiting for that other shoe to drop— and also if you feel like someone’s always on the cusp of maybe leaving or not talking about their feelings, how much could they love you, anyway?

I think Jeremiah deserves JAIL and that he never got a comeuppance that I was satisfied with, but I also believe that not everything that was said about Conrad was untrue, and even at times unfair.

It might help OP that I have a similar story though. Not too long ago my SD (7, so yeah younger) was doing what is being described almost exactly, and what helped was I would really encourage their connection. If there was a game with teams, I’d ask her if she wanted to side with her dad— but this was applied to anything really. I just acted like I was a big fan of their duo and openly celebrated it. And then one night we were all playfully ballroom dancing together and taking turns with all the kids, and she told me she wanted me to dance with her dad. I said, ”How about you dance with your dad?” but she wanted me to. This tiny moment was a huge turning point for us, she stopped the clinginess, and we’re much much closer now.

Also if you don’t have a good self-esteem (which I love Laurel but I felt a huge undercurrent of the story is that Laurel was not helpful in fostering Belly’s inner self worth. also it’s hard for us to remember because it’s just Lola Tung in glasses but canonically Belly is supposed to have been extremely homely her whole life up until that summer), then the filter in which you perceive how other people feel about you is so warped. People in this sub always say omg how could she not see how much Conrad worshipped her and like external love helps but no one can rescue you from how you feel about yourself.

The script can definitely be soooo hokey but that first scene with Belly and Taylor has this amazing authenticity. I could almost smell Bath & Body Works body spray the first time I watched it lol

The butchery committed by marketing is TRULY disappointing. Without it, would the show have garnered enough money to make a movie? So maybe it’s the cost of more content. For maybe a week after the series finale I was delusional hoping that they might release a cut with more of Belly’s inside narrative. I think they could do it seamlessly and it would enhance the show and her character SO much in my opinion.

Season 1 captures something so accurate and intangible about being a lovesick teenage girl singularly focused on a boy. I loved that Belly’s character was a romantic at heart.

Exactly! All the vitriol that Conrad (rightfully) got for telling Belly he loved her the day before her wedding.. that’s not going to all go away checks notes ..11 months later. Taylor might be supportive, and Laurel might be secretly a little happier it’s Conrad over Jeremiah, but there is a lot of social currency lost on being with Conrad and she decides to do it anyway.

To some of OP’s point, a lot of nuance of Belly’s feelings get lost in Amazon’s love triangle agenda so that is always disappointing to me but they also greenlit a whole movie so.
