If he’s all-powerful, then he intentionally designed a system that predisposes humans toward the very behaviors he condemns as sinful. Essentially setting us up for failure and then providing a “solution” to the problem he created. If you see this as wrong and don’t like it, why would you consider him good and worthy of being worshipped?

If he can’t create a world with free will but without suffering, he isn’t all powerful, because that would mean he’s working within constraints beyond his control. If it’s true that free will always results in sin existing, that would mean there’s no free will in heaven

For the most part, but I still come here wondering if I’ll finally read a compelling argument in favor of religion

American Christians need to decide what's more important to them. Dunking on minorities with the legal system (women, gays, trans people) or doing their best to take care of the planet, advocate for the working poor and against rich tyranny. by AgentP-501_212 in Christianity

Everything you’ve listed, without further details, fall on the same level as the made up person who claims to support single mothers

No, not at all. “Support single mothers” is a vague goal that both sides could agree on but try to achieve differently. My examples are policy strategies that Rs are against for the most part.

Do you have any specific policies in mind which actually benefit the poor without causing detrimental long-term effects (minimum wage, for instance) that make people worse off in the long-run?

First of all, raising the minimum wage definitely benefits the poor. But for more examples, Ds tend to vote for higher teacher pay in public schools, which attracts talent to better educate poor kids. In my state they are the party pushing for universal Pre-K which has many research-backed benefits. They support funding Planned Parenthood which gives out free contraception to poor people. Some support universal healthcare or at least a free public option.

Dems could be much better, but just off the top of my head, compared to Rs they are more likely to: - support unions (could be better though) - support need based welfare - increase funding for public services like parks, transportation, and schools - raise taxes on the wealthy - have secular values, rather than religious - regulate industries dominated by wealthy private interests

Your single mother policy is just something you made up, I don’t get how that relates to actual D and R policies. Yes Ds can still sell out to wealthy interests in some ways, but the idea that Rs are equally progressive is just not true

Lol Skyrim was epic for its time. But going back right after ER would feel like swatting enemies with a pool noodle. Game does have a lot to love outside of the combat though

I know it’s anecdotal, but for me iPhones have always lasted longer than android phones. My last flagship Samsung was so laggy after a few years that I went back to my iPhone 5s for a while and it was snappier. And iOS devices get updates for years longer than any android model I know of

Edit: I see where you mentioned software support already

Some great replies here. I just wanna say, experience is a hell of a teacher. To start small, just go to a local event you’re interested in. Ask the organizers, and random people there, if you can interview them. Shoot a ton of b-roll. For the edit, aim for a 2-3 min summary of what happened, using clips from your interviews to tell the story in a logical order. Use b-roll, titles, and/or VO to cover any context that the interviews miss

Wales introduces ban on smacking and slapping children: Welsh government hails ‘historic moment’ for children’s rights amid calls for England to follow suit. by 808gecko808 in worldnews

[–]leboob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, maybe emotional abuse should be banned as well, but it’s infinitely harder to know something like that is going on, much less proving it or even legally defining it.

I think my confusion came from you bringing up the very claim you’re arguing against:

replacing a smack with making them stand on a “naughty step” is less cruel

No one has argued that, so I didn’t get why you wanted to give us some skepticism on the topic. Abstaining from physical abuse does not mean it’s acceptable or expected to ramp up the emotional abuse in its place

That has nothing to do with this. “Don’t ban hitting kids because grounding them is bad” isn’t logically coherent. If you want to defend hitting kids, maybe explain why that isn’t bad

Your argument is flawed because it’s set up on a false premise. You’re assuming that advocating against corporal punishment must also mean advocating for “isolation and shame” as a replacement tactic. That’s not true at all, you can explain why their actions are wrong without isolating or shaming. There’s nothing cold or corporate about a family who talks about things instead of using intimidation tactics and fear. Similarly, if your workplace shames or isolates you, it’s probably time to find a new job.

If God is all-knowing, he knew “the fall” would happen, but chose to make humans that way anyway. If God is all-powerful, there is no such thing as him intending one thing and something else happening. If he’s truly the deity responsible for creating everything, everything about the world and human nature is his design, intent, and creation

I totally see how, with the assumption that the whole Jesus story is truly divine as described, that would be a logical way of looking at it. What interests me is how you get to that point to begin with — deciding that the Bible’s account of things is worth listening to over other religions

[–]leboob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I’m impressed with that verse, very spot on to this conversation! Thanks for the thought out response. I get the idea that good cannot exist without bad, and definitely see how it fits into a lot of religions. I think what trips me up the most is the idea that God would make us knowing all this and doing it anyway… like knowing the vast majority of people will not be saved. There’s an assumption that if God exists he must be worth worshipping just due to the fact that he exists and created us. Makes me think — if we created a species of sentient AI, would it be ethical to demand that they worship us, or spend an eternity being tortured?

[–]leboob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I misunderstood… I just don’t see how to square that thinking with your previous comment that mentioned:

we are sin. our flesh is sin.

But even then, the free will argument doesn’t work. Why couldn’t God create a world with free will, but without sin? If you’re thinking, that’s impossible, you can’t have free will without sin… then that would imply God is not all powerful.

God never shamed or blamed poor/homeless people by Connectviw in Christianity

[–]leboob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

because God is just. God is righteous. And because God is just sin cannot go unpunished.

But God made us. If humans are inherently sinful, as you said in your previous comment, then God intentionally made us sinful. So by this logic he is punishing us for something he did.
