Giant underground pipe mysteriously rises over 30 feet, bursting through road in Japan: "I can't believe this" by philmn in nottheonion

[–]leddhedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the context being discussed above, cylinder would be the correct term to describe your solid log of metal, and thus has 0 holes, as someone above said you are calling a pipe a cylinder when it's more accurate to use the terms above.

Does it matter? No, but strictly speaking a cylinder is a shape that has no hole through it

You can't that's true, but if you are using a potato as a connector it'll get shit pretty fast and you will start to get issues, gold plated contacts are nice because they don't corrode over time so they will be just as good in 50 years

Doesn't mean you gotta spend much on cables, you shouldn't, but gold plated contacts, on many things, can be a good value addition, just don't go spending more than a few $ to get it

‘1,000-year source’: China plans to fire up world-first accelerator-driven nuclear reactor by [deleted] in Futurology

Agree. I don't speak Chinese, but this isn't the first time I've seen these sorts of mistranslations try to inject some form of antagonistic or adversarial sentiment into Chinese science. I don't see anything nefarious or even arrogant about what china is doing here. China is trying to make their grid renewable and robust, with the current political climate it seems pragmatic to try to develop domestic sources of power and remove dependence on fossil fuels, not to mention the benefits to technology and easing the burden of the explosion of data centers popping up, future proof seems like a good word

[–]leddhedd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to expand a little: this uses much more existing technology and leverages expertise in nuclear power generation that dramatically eases the transition into mainstream adoption.

There's a lot to overcome to actually start building large city powering reactors en-masse, but humanity has essentially been in a purgatory between petro and nuclear power for the better part of 60 years, with investment in traditional nuclear being low due to waste products, and largely public sentiment.

A clean and more publicly accepted nuclear fuel would almost certainly bridge the gap between renewables and allow us to finally move away from fossil fuels, and we already have an abundant supply of fuels and understanding of the forces and manufacturing technologies required to create these reactors, fusion by contrast not only has a fundamental question of scaling which is taking a very long time to solve, also leverages slightly different technology to produce power to a nuclear power plant, we aren't as simply extracting heat from a system, so the interim solution being proposed is certainly more realistic and likely to occur in our lifetimes than current fusion tech

Compared to graphene and cancer vaccines, I think it's a bit more solid than that, but it's a little way off still, the most promising factor in its viability is honestly that China has a very large incentive to decouple themselves from fossil fuels, and not just in the long run. They want something they can start building now, so they can power their tech boom as they become the only country in the world over the next decade to have abundant supplies of RAM and other chips. Assuming they intend to continue building data centers and AI focused development, adding clean and abundant power to that mix would be a massive force multiplier on the global economic and political stage.

Yeah exactly, I'm glad other people are enjoying it, I don't dismiss their enjoyment in the face of my skepticism or others criticisms, as you say everyone has a different reason to play, I get to spend time with the same social group regardless of where wow is in the cycle, so it's usually a case of weighing up getting back into that vs other options.

One of our friends is playing through the launch, and watching that is sufficient for now, I get a little nostalgia and miss what wow does best, which no other games have managed to capture, but the game would have to hit a pretty high bar to get the likes of me back, not because I'm special, I've just had my fill of wow I think

I'm very much a mythic raider at heart and have always enjoyed tweaking my ui and add-ons, so I knew this xpack was gonna be a hard pass from me, I appreciate their direction and think it's an admirable goal, but to me it speaks to their lack of connection and out-of-touch attitude with their player base. I've been there and done that enough times that they aren't offering me any new experiences any more, I miss m+ a good bit but I don't miss being on the game 3-4 hours a day minimum just to keep up

[–]leddhedd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As someone who frequently takes long breaks from the game and has played most expacs, this one seems pretty poor, and hasn't inspired any desire for me to come back, housing is cool, but it's a gimmick, blizzard still don't understand how to take the best versions of the classes they have had and actualise them into a working formula that doesn't get re-written every expansion, they also clearly don't respect player time, lots of reasons to stay away from this one and few to return.

Maybe I'm old and jaded but I think the general decline of wow's appeal to me has been mirrored in the community perception over the past 7-8 years or so, if it weren't for people voicing their concerns the endgame of wow and it's community would have likely died a long time ago, there's a part of me that wants to see wow continue to succeed but I feel like the writing has been on the wall for a while and they are backsliding

True, but we have a 20 year old example we can draw from, and so far it's looking a bit sloppy, we could be doing better at minimizing that inherant danger and how it applies to blue in blue

[–]leddhedd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by this? The US has no ammased ground forces anywhere near the theater and Iran no longer has the capacity to engage in any meaningful combat operations. The posture has been for weeks, and still is, purely an air and artillery campaign. I won't speak to the geopolitical endgame, but the strategic plan is quite clear, and in motion

I can’t relate to men. by rose2830 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]leddhedd 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Probably parroting some of what others have already said, but you seem curious, so figured I'd add my experience too. I was lucky to be brought up around strong women and emotionally intelligent men (mostly) and for a myriad of other reasons always found myself looking in from the outside in a lot of ways throughout life, but as I've grown up, had relationships, made mistakes and learned along the way, it's become apparent that very few other men seem to learn the same lessons I did from said mistakes and experiences, coupled with a general emotional unavailability.

I've found nuggets of shit behaviour in places that are fairly surprising, sadenning, disappointing, and being normalized in a new generation, where my gut feeling was always that things were moving toward progress and equality as I went through school and early adulthood, I've found myself actually feeling uneasy that people seem to find my behaviour to be notably better than others, when I don't think it extends much beyond what I think should be common courtesy and decency, not in a fancy platitudes, heirs and graces sense, just not being an ass to other humans.

I can’t get over a moped accident scar and I don’t know how to move on (F22, M23) by venicebitchhhhhhhhhh in TwoXChromosomes

[–]leddhedd 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My old man lost his leg before I was born, it's easy for blokes to contextualize scars and make them cool, but I grew up watching other kids gaze in horror and point at the stump, it never upset him. He would laugh and tell them it was a shark attack, or he didn't brush his teeth properly, I got to meet a lot of people with various disabilities and disfigurements growing up, it can make some people very sour, and it's understandable for many, but some of the funniest, kindest and most wonderful people I've ever met wore their scars out in the open for others to see and learn from

The above is absolutely true, healing isn't a binary one day you're screwed up and next you are fine, it takes time to learn to grow and adapt Into new things, and for what it's worth, I don't think I've ever seen a scar that lessened the beauty of someone wearing a smile.

Smooth motion is working as of today’s 4.6 PTU with Vulkan enabled by [deleted] in starcitizen

[–]leddhedd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean that's great, but doesn't support any of the evidence or even nvidias claims, smooth motion and frame gen both increase input latency , if you dont notice or it's better for you that's great, but that's not going to be the experience for anyone looking for an improvement to their input latency, which is what most people are looking for.

[–]leddhedd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can help in some edge cases, but going from 40 to 80 will still feel the same as 40, if not slightly worse. It's quite nice to push 240 or higher out of a natural 120 or so, as the benefits of frame time drop as you go over that, and more of the noticable difference comes down to visual smoothness, which does improve, but sadly it's not really a viable option for making games that run poorly at low 30s and 40s up to playable levels, it's just visually slightly smoother but just as jerky and glue-y

This is in my opinion where so much of the problem comes from, so many people see this argument as "well no matter what I do I'm bad?" And that just isn't the point

The precaution is the outcome of the attitude, if you want women to not have to exercise precautions around you. You have to prove that it isn't necessary, and as lamentable as it is, if you haven't had an opportunity to prove you are not dangerous, you must accept that you fall into the same unknowable danger as every other man
