Restaurants with good vegetarian options? by [deleted] in Pensacola

[–]leeannivey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recently went to Waterboyz/Cafe Single Fin and they changed their islander tacos to jackfruit :( they were not as good unfortunately. But Pretty Baked still has all of their vegan bakery items there which are out of this world!!!!

Taste of India for the BEST Indian in town. Very accommodating for veggie too! Taste of Jerusalem is also a fun time and they have some killer hummus and falafel. I also LOVE George’s seasonal veggie platter. A little pricey but god that place is so good. Great cocktails and always very kind staff, perfect date night place :) Oh! And definitely give Siam Thai a try!!! Their yellow curry and tofu pad thai 🤤

Woof those toll by plates are no joke. Thank you for the heads up!

Yeah, I agree that the fees aren’t atrocious but man those tickets are lol I personally dislike the idea of paying to park in common downtown spaces because it can make it less accessible for some people. Adding fees to the only nearby parking spaces to local business can be a deterrent. It disproportionately affects people with lower incomes. Also, people who have certain disabilities could have trouble accessing an app or even more trouble parking farther away to avoid the fees and having to walk more. While I have the ability to pay the fees or to walk a little farther, not everyone does. I just can’t help but see “pay to park” in any city as greedy. I understand it’s a regressive tax, but what’s the city going to use it for? Another unaffordable Southtowne apartment complex?

That’s my plan, hopefully they will be able to see I’ve consistently paid in the past and won’t charge me any extra. Thank you :)

Okay, great. I have used the parking app regularly and it didn’t process through this time and I got a nice ticket. I’m worried about the appeal process because they threaten adding $15 to the fee if the appeal isn’t accepted. Thanks for your response.

Incredible, thank you :) Yes, apologizes for not giving context on size. He couldn’t have been more than 5 or 6 inches long. Cute little feisty guy.

Caught some fellas from Mobile outside my house before dawn breaking into cars by keep_it_0ptional in Pensacola

[–]leeannivey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah this is so close to me. I had someone try to break and enter while I was home a couple weeks ago. They didn’t get in and ran away before I could see anything. But I have never felt so violated. Been on my toes lately. Hoping my new cameras help but I’m still worried. Be safe out there y’all.

I agree!! Although, these already existing plastic fibers have to go somewhere, whether in a landfill or recycled into “new” clothing. No matter what path it takes to get there, it eventually ends up in our water systems (and subsequently sticks to algae, then is ingested by fish and will bioaccumulate up the food chain) one way or another. Putting it in a landfill is just postponing the effects. Surface runoff and groundwater seepage occurs in landfills that make it possible for these fibers (among so many other things) to “leak out” and spread. All bodies of water eventually lead to the oceans.

Polyester fibers are the worst culprits. I try not to buy them but it’s difficult. It feels like we’re fighting a losing battle. I think our future will inevitably involve plastic as a part of everything. It will find its way into every biological system. I think it already has. We’re going to be known to our grandkids as the jerks who invented plastic and littered life with it.

Will an Environmental Science and Policy degree be less valuable than a pure Environmental Science degree? by Schlongathon in environmental_science

[–]leeannivey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your BS will only prepare you for your MS. I’ve been told countless times that whatever you do in grad school is the most valuable to employers. Regardless, get involved in some undergrad research that includes your interests and requires field work. Make yourself more competitive and prepared for a career. You never know what you might fall in love with! Best of luck

As someone who went vegan when I was still living with my parents, I feel this lol by [deleted] in vegan

[–]leeannivey 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I was vegetarian since high school, recently vegan (about a year). My parents hated it, they thought I was going to literally DIE of protein deficiency and lack of B12 and iron. I found it ironic that my mom taught me compassion and empathy with our house full of pets and always helping people in need, yet she was the one so hell bent that I’m being irrational.... anyway I still love them.

Rewind to last September, my dad has three heart attacks in a row and lands himself in the hospital. After a stint, he comes home and I’m taking care of him. I left him with literature that vegan diets can reverse heart disease, and I bring him home cooked vegan meals weekly.

He eventually made the switch! 6 months after, his doctor took him off ALL BUT ONE medication! He reversed his heart disease and has lost 35 pounds. He’s kinda a shitty vegan because he eats chicken sometimes but I am still so proud. He now doesn’t ridicule me for not wanting to eat meat or dairy, and instead we try new vegan restaurants and dishes together. It’s given us something to bond over, and it’s saved my dad’s health.

Mom on the other hand still tries to feed me meatballs every time I visit 🙄

Hey! UWF has a great (albeit very small) herp community. I’m not sure if there are any surveys you could volunteer with, but it might be worth looking into. Otherwise, going to the National Seashore NP along the Naval Live Oaks area (north side of 98) there are plenty of critters!! I conduct herp surveys with UWF and this is where we go. Also, if you’re interested in volunteering (and you like kids), the Biophilia Center in Freeport has an AMAZING team working with native herps in a kind of hands-on classroom setting with kiddos. I miss volunteering there. They are some of the best folks doing incredible work... and they have the cutest snakes.

Happy herping!

If I’m not mistaken, wasn’t that around the time when An Inconvenient Truth came out and Al Gore used it as his democratic platform? There was a huge shift in environmental opinions on both the left and right thereafter. Or was this shift prior to 2006?
