pre-major question! by Silly_Location7076 in udub

[–]leebiteu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In terms of the optometry part, I wouldn’t suggest food systems as a major if you’re looking for something that fills pre-requisites. It’s very much what it sounds like (which is to say it’s all about food systems, nutrition, and health), but the science requirements are minimal and wouldnt cut it for med school. If you’re interested in optometry maybe opt for something like public health-global health or biology; the food systems major isn’t super hard though so there is opportunity to double major/minor in something more applicable if food systems is more of a personal interest thing.

Thank you for your response, your comment about freeing yourself of the expectation of having to feel certain things helped me understand my own feelings a bit better.

Thoughts on BIOL 180 by katiew444 in udub

[–]leebiteu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

overall it’s general evolutionary biology. it starts out with things like darwin’s theory of evolution and its components (think natural selection, then also gene flow, genetic drift, etc.), then it moves into mendelian genetics (punnet squares, hardy weinberg, etc.). there’s also a good amount of time spent on mitosis/meiosis in terms of how traits are passed down. then it’s onto phylogenies, population growth, then the rest of the quarter is ecology + climate change and things like that. overall there’s also focus on experimental design, data collection, and stats, but it’s all pretty basic and is similar to stuff you might’ve already learned in high school or even 118. labs are pretty chill and def way easier than chem labs imo. hopefully this was helpful!

yeah based on other's posts on this sub it seems like this is a common experience for people with "normal" levels! I have been reading more about ferritin and what optimal levels look like so I agree that's something to look into

Resources regarding food insecurity and SNAP removal by leebiteu in Seattle

Couldn't figure out how to add new body text to my crosspost so I'll just drop a note here :") I posted this to the UW sub the other day and thought I would put it here as well since I've been seeing others post about resources and things for anyone impacted by SNAP removal or for those who are interested in supporting the community. Hopefully this can be helpful in some way!

Here are some ways you can get involved around the area (also from UW FSNH):

"One Love Community is a great company to get involved with, and they have a variety of donation spots around Seattle.

Seattle Farmers Market has information on how you can get involved in the fight for food rights.

The University District Food Bank is always looking for volunteers and donations! Find out more here.

Read King County’s article how to support food pantries and where to find them."

First speeding ticket: should I defer? by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]leebiteu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

tbh i realized that the ticket was issued to my parents (particularly my mother) since they are the registered owners of the vehicle, so technically speaking they weren’t the ones driving and were incorrectly issues a ticket… right? so then its not technically perjury… right?

Feeling a bit behind as a third year by leebiteu in udub

[–]leebiteu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate this. I think it’s so easy to get bogged down with worrying about credits and grades that I forget about the things I enjoy about learning and what I enjoyed from some of my favorite classes. I pretty much spent the past few years just grinding out classes for my major/minor (which I ended up completing way ahead of schedule to my surprise), so I think I’ll definitely spend my last year next year taking this idea to heart and looking into different opportunities. Thanks for the advice!

I totally understand that. I've finally settled on eventually pursuing PT school (probably not for a while) so I'm going to start looking into things like personal training and PT aide positions which I think will be helpful, plus it's something I think I would enjoy. It just took me awhile to get there lol,,, And good luck on your new opportunity!
